Some ass named Donato's style pizza to be ohio pizza. And the asses in ohio took one look at that and said, "yeah, I can see that".

Seems like we had a National Pizza day last week. How often do these come around?

Not that I'm complaining.

that list doesn't even have the best pizza in NYC.

But New Haven is the right answer.

I look forward to a real Italian (aka, person born in the USA to parents both born in the USA and only family member they've ever met who has set foot in Italy is their grandma who moved to America when she was 3) to tell everyone what real pizza is (aka pizza style not made or eaten in Italy).

Frank's on Middletown Rd in the Bronx. Best in the City.

Nothing wrong with Salvatore's, it's my regular due to proximity, but it's not even the best chain in Rochester.

It has deep fried sausage. With garlic-parm. As a side dish. DEEP FRIED SAUSAGE!

/It's MY go-to for pie at home, because of the price point and convenience. And they make a pretty good crust. And they shove capicola on everything but the cannoli. The world needs more capicola.

The best pizza is CLEARLY St Louis style. A literal saltine for a crust, some sort of tomato based toothpaste for sauce, an unholy frankencheese (Provel) "melted" on top. It is as midwestern as something can be.

Detroit pizza is ass.  Not in a good way.  It's like the signature part of Detroit pizza is burning the crust into awfulness, or something.  Yuck.

The best pizza in Kentucky used to come from a place up in the Red River Gorge east of Lexington about 50 miles. It's run by a guy who moved here from New Haven, Connecticut. I have no idea if his stuff is New Haven style since I've never been to  New Haven. In recent years, a couple of Louisville places have eclipsed his. (When my extended family get together for a meal, we meet in Louisville and my sisters buy pizza.) So, small sample size. It's just tomato sauce and cheese on pretty dry bread. You gotta get nuclear physicists in to calibrate the difference.

NJ pizza > all others. It's science.

// there is/was a place in DC on P St just off Dupont Circle (I think it's called Dupont Pizza) that was my go-to when I lived there
// it's right above another, less good pizza place
// do other cities do Jumbo Slice? (I know there's that place in Yonkers, NY that does whole-pie sized "slices", but that's not what I mean)

I agree, it's the best to line a birdcage or litterbox with.

Motor City Double Pepperoni is on the menu*. There's a place a couple miles north that claims to have NY-style by the slice, haven't tried it.

*Unless Fred Meyer's still has Digiorno croissant-crust on sale. My wife wants to try it.

NJ doesn't sell pizza, they sell Tomato Pie.

It's not even in the top 3 in Rochester.
- TK's Pizza
- Nino's Pizza
- Joe's Brooklyn Pizza

Are all better. Hell, when it comes to chains, I think Salvatore's is the worst in the city. You have to like sourdough crust, and I hate it.

yep.  And unfortunately they closed their downtown original location.  I think they still have 2 or 3 other locations, but they are out in the burbs opposite town from the ones I live in.. so much farther than the downtown one was.

There was a joint in Hoboken I went to about 20 years ago that had the best I ever had. It was one of those 3-generation, holes in the walls where everything was covered in grime. But the product was heavenly.

The next best was a kind of touristy place in Little Italy that served a killer Marghetta. That meal was finished by going across the street for fresh gelato.

Electriclectic: I wish more cities had their own pizza styles

I think each city is a bit unique, here in Rochester for example, one of the biggest local chains has very thick crust and huge pizzas (and is a personal favorite).

img.restaurantguru.comView Full Size

This is the standard size, generally when I order it, I get extra dough for even thicker pies.

Detroit pizza is not just square cut. It requires these things: made in a rimmed pan, not flat; the toppings are upside down (cheese on the bottom, sauce on top); brick cheese; and needs to be cooked at a very high temperature so the cheese burns slightly. That's very different from "Chicago style".
