Too bad there isn't a preview function or something.  I did a cut and paste, and it didn't appear that it was in the screen.

Exactly what harebrained change management are they running over there now where people are running development on the production environment, and they are making any changes last week, this week, and next week. When you consider the Grammy's and Superbowl this is a very busy time for them.

Please ignore my Boobies and consider this one to be the correct one.

So they're going to roll out a pay-per-Tweet model? First five are free, then 10¢ each? Blue people get 50 free then 5¢ each? Posting images are 2x that cost? Because that's what it looks like they're gearing up for.

Well at least those 50-part Twitter threads will go away. People will have to go back to txtspk to get their message in as few Tweets as possible.

The API changes that got rolled back for a week allow 4000 word tweets, but you'll have to click the "more" button to read the whole thing. So if you can't write it in 280 characters, fuggetaboutit.

Anybody who thought Twitter would explode in a fit of hilarity that soon after firing the dev teams was delusional. What's happening is basically skipping oil changes on your car. Yeah, missing one and going 13000 miles before you remember won't kill the car. It's not good, but your engine will survive it. Going 90,000 miles without an oil change will kill the car.

Twitter won't just collapse. It'll slowly see more things breaking or remaining unsupported over the coming months that just get rationalized as the new normal. The flow of people departing will continue as Twitter bleeds market value.

I don't think twitter will crash but I think it will fade like myspace has and a bunch of other social media. I think Elmo has fast tracked that with all his crap and the more he lets the racists and nazis on there it will drive away users. Now would be the perfect time for a new player to come on the field and start drawing away users.

Elmo's worst nightmare is all the major media players migrating to Post.  So, of course, he's busily hastening that happening.

Honestly, twitter could very well have exploded immediately.  Why?  The world cup previously put the whole site under massive strain and they had to do a whole lot of white knuckling to keep it up.

I think the dev's who initially started the "LOL its burning down train" rolling just didn't take into account the reduced load from all the people booking it off Twitter.

Now of course the oil change argument is the correct one.

No. There are no regulations for Mastodon server owners or admins, and given that servers are individually owned, opens you up to a whole host of issues from admins reading your DM's to a laundry list of security concerns and issues.

Here's the Harvard B-school case study on Twitter:

Putting Elon aside for a moment, Twitter's problem is that its growth plateaued years ago, and what makes its platform popular with its users doesn't appeal to the masses, and, it's impossible to monetize. Copying what other platforms do will never solve its growth and revenue problem because they'll always be playing catch up, and they risk pissing off their most loyal users.

What Twitter needs to do is leverage its brand equity to branch out into completely new fields. This is exactly what Apple did. They realized that they'd never gain market share with personal computers, and instead of continuing to fight a losing battle, they pivoted to making other devices and services.

What's remarkable, is that Musk doesn't seem to understand this.

He's not a bad business person -- the fact that Tesla is so widely overvalued is proof of that. And, if you look at his business career, he has a history of pivoting into new areas instead of doubling-down on a single field.

Yeah - but this one is weird. He's gone from vehicles on the road, vehicles under the ground, vehicles up into space - to a declining social media company that he's clearly addicted to. It's obviously a field that he doesn't know anything about and isn't open to any feedback about what he's doing is a horrible idea.

I'm very disappointed that he hasn't broken it completely and shut it the fark down yet.   Or gotten it shutdown by crossing various red lines.   It's almost as if all the regulators in the world have spent the last 2 decades becoming voluntarily toothless.
