And ban raised floors for tournament games, it's a miracle no one's gotten seriously hurt yet

To give you an idea of how serious UMaine is about basketball:

If I recognize that room right, it's capacity is *maybe* 1000.  Probably less.  It's definitely not in Alfond Arena.

UMaine is not known for having a lot of luck or talent in basketball.

/graduated in the 90s, things may have changed there

It's at Bangor's Cross Insurance Center, their "big game" arena. They play like half their games there.

Why do they raise them at all? So players don't block the views?

Isn't Maine one of a handful of Division 1 schools that have never appeared in the NCAA basketball tournament?

Google tells me it is 35 teams (out of 358) that have never made it (and Maine is one of them), but I think I also saw a school named UHGTV on the list so I don't know how accurate it is.

I wouldn't be surprised.

The only good teams UMaine was ever able to field were hockey teams; but I guess even that's been a while since they've made a tournament appearance.

They would have been in the tournament in 2020 if not for the cancellation. But that was more due to a stud goalie and that's it. If we're being realist they haven't had a legit contending team since about 2005 or so. And to be honest it was never quite the same after Shawn Walsh passed.
