Retiring in Maine sounds nice.  Raising kids there, not so much.

They need to coat the investigation in fire fighting foam to think about the problem.

/PFAS is everywhere.

No need to test the bottled water because we know it's safe because it's in bottles.

Slowly at first, and then all at once, is the human civilization collapses.

When you get down to it perfluorooctanesulfonic acid is kind of a cute molecule. Baby shark has competition

Our town just spent millions on a PFAS filtration system and is now joining a lawsuit against the manufacturers of the chemical. It does not occur anywhere naturally and cannot be anything but environmental contamination.

It depends where in Maine.  Portland is nice, but most of the state is very rural MAGA country.
If you don't care though you can get a place for under $100k.

Just what the world needs... another lawsuit to clog up the airwaves / internet with law firm ads.

Prices shot up during COVID when people started flocking to the country to relocate. If you don't mind living in the boonies, you can still get really cheap housing.

Prices in Waterville, where I got a house in 2015 for $100K are now about 160K-200K for a 1200-1500sqft house.

The coastal towns until you get towards Calais or Lubec have always been expensive because people still buy out houses for summer homes.
I did a find a house for $100K in Greenville (Moosehead Lake).

The larger towns and cities aren't full throat-on MAGA, but the smaller towns do. The college towns do balance it out.

The original source of the PFAS were industrial plants that dumped into lakes and rivers. It was then collected in sludge from water processing plants, which resold it as fertilizer to farms. It then seeped into the soil and contaminated livestock and crops.

Right by Bangor airport, former home of Dow AFB. They've had a military presence there since at least the 50s. My dad was stationed there when I was a borned.

I grew up on Ellsworth AFB. I remember seeing them practice fighting fires, spraying foam all over. And back then, the burning material of choice was contaminated jet fuel pooled around the simulated aircraft. That went on weekly for decades at scores of military bases.

Any one reading that now would say "ick" and know that can't be good. Why they didn't seem to think or care back then, I can't imagine.

It's a forever chemical that never breaks down. Once you've got PFAS,  you've got it forever.

It's in everything that is nonstick or waterproof. They help strengthen plastics and are even used in cosmetics.

Give a big thank you to the petrochemical companies and fossil fuels companies for there choice in lobbying firms.

There's no EPA regulation of its use or disposal and the EPA has known about the danger posed by PFAS since 1998. PFAS was discovered in the 1930s and came into wide spread use in the 1950s.

California has banned the sale of items containing PFAS as of 2025. It's actually a weak law with no oversight so it's pretty much a paper tiger. But it's a start. Not a good one,  but a start. We shouldn't have feet of clay moving on this but the fossil fuel industry pretty much ran the country for decades so it's going to be an uphill, expensive and lengthy battle.

PFAS and fossil fuels are the CFC of our times. We stopped CFC usage and healed the hole in the ozone layer. If you believe fossil fuels and petrochemicals aren't affecting the planet think about CFC usage. For the most part the damage caused by CFCs were spay cans that contained CFCs. Hair spray and the like.

But over a billion vehicles spewing out pollutants and a petrochemical that never breaks down and is used in the manufacturing process of everything from cosmetics to diving equipment and lawn furniture, both known to cause all manner of illness couldn't possible have an effect on the earth or our health. Right?

Not much up there though.  I prefer Bethel or Portland.
I've spent a lot of time up in Maine since the late 70s, spent weekends and vacations there from the mid-80s until recently.
Noticed the area around Rangley Lake is very MAGA.

Having spent the last few weeks preparing a seminar presentation of persistent organic pollutants and methods of bioremediation, I'm really getting a kick out of this thread.
