I guess that's nice, but who has spy balloons?  I'd assume countries have been using spy satellites for at least 20 years.

I mean... the US has produced entire libraries of propaganda pieces about good-guy Marine Seal Team Sniper Beret Alpha Chad saving the US from some hostile foreign nation or minor terrorist group with nukes when the US has unarguably been the only real nuclear threat to anyone for half a century now (and one of only two nuclear threats at most since 1945) and using that specific fact to get away with hostile actions against everyone else while most of that propo was being published, so I don't think we're really in a position to point and laugh at this.

It's standard propaganda procedure because it's the first trick in a book we wrote, y'know?

Have you ever tried to steer a satellite? Balloons can be guided to a degree. Both have their uses in espionage.

Plus you're talking about massively different distances, so there are some definite advantages to being so much closer.

It's the question that has been answered in every thread but keeps getting asked.

So, uh, not to alarm anyone but 2 days before the media broke the news about that Chinese balloon, I had seen some weird shiat in the sky (probably a Mylar balloon or a drone) and I literally thought to myself "I wonder if the Chinese are sending high-atmospheric balloons over the continent?"

When you say threat, do you mean Monday morning quarterback threat over the last 60 years, or the literal threats of Russia, North Korea, Russia, Iran, Russia, China once, Russia, Cuba, and Russia?

And not normal Reagan hollywood movie and Faux Newz propoganda threats, but actual released to international networks, threats.

Because yeah, over the last 60 years nothing had happened. That's bad?

It's not like the advanced technology/optics for the really kick ass spy satellites is equally available to everyone. And satellites can be tracked and anticipated.

Balloons are cheaper, they can get a closer look at things, and it's a good way to gauge the response of the target nation. Do they even notice it? Are they capable of shooting it down? Does the process of shooting it down reveal a previously unknown weapon capability? Can they collect some signals/intelligence from the attempt?

Now here's some tinfoil(?) for you:

They're using balloons because they're planning to kessler the local orbital real estate and thinking satellites won't be viable.

I'm gonna add it to my list

Why can't they just fire her?
Why can't they just raise the bridge?
Why doesn't she just shave her head?
Why don't they just pull the ship out?
Why can't they just use satellites?

A couple years ago, a story came out where someone substituted gorilla glue for their normal hair care product, with predictable results. It turned out the hair was so smooshed and stuck to her scalp that shaving it was impossible, though that didn't stop farkers from repeating the suggestion. She ended up seeing some kind of specialist to get scalp surgery. Here's the best write-up I can find on it

I know, Right! Satellites are superior to balloons in every possible way! There is zero chance the US would even think of using balloons for anything.
