They have any US prisoners we can trade it for?

Yeah China, we'll get back to you on that.

I mean that's kind of SOP.

We did the same when our stuff crashed over their territory Hainen Island Incident

We should send them a box of lederhosen with a DVD of Red Square(1997).

2023-02-08 6:49:07 PM
We'll give it back to them after we've had a good look at it. That's kind of the standard protocol for this type of thing.

Yeah, after they got our P-3 to land on Hainan by, er, basically kamikaze'ing a fighter jet into it, they did take a little while to return it.  We can probably get their toy back to them in less than the three months it took them to release what was left of our plane.

/my only landing at Hainan was commercial.

This is a funny idea.  The US can ask for a list of components for the "weather balloon" to ensure all it if returned.

They seem real desperate to have their "weather balloon" back for some reason.

As I said in the first thread-- the polite thing to do is bring it down, examine it, and return it. Instead, the military's first reports were they had to check it for explosives-- after hitting it with a missile.

Now I admit how to bring it down free from air traffic and ensure it doesn't land on top of somebody's head presented some interesting proposals not only from Farkers, but probably many of a classified character from experts keen to consider every plausibility to keep the defense secrets of Itchy & Scratchy from becoming public knowledge...

But a laser to poke small holes sufficient to result in a slow descent and a company of drones attached by super-sticky tethers to guide it safely would have been a sanity and poise superior to a heat-seeking missile.

Ning continued, "It didn't pose any threat to any person or to the national security of the US. The US should have properly handled such incidents in a calm and professional manner not involving the use of force, yet they decided to do otherwise, which is a clear overreaction."

I really doubt there are many people around the world, government officials or otherwise, that would agree what we saw looks anything like what happens when the US government decides to have a military 'overreaction'.

Could it have been brought down more daintily?  Sure!  However, who gives a shiat about polite?  It was unmanned and flying over our land.  They have zero to say about how any of it is handled.

The Chinese demand sounds like a textbook example of chutzpah. Leo Rosten's classic example of which is:   killing both of your parents and then asking the court for mercy because you're an orphan.

That standoff was largely due to a cultural difference in what an apology means. China wanted an apology, because their pilot was killed. But to Americans an apology means accepting responsibility, and the collision wasn't their fault, so why would they apologize? In Asian cultures an apology just means I'm sorry this happened, and China could not understand why the Americans wouldn't say that. Eventually Bush said that.

The military shoulda cloned and synched the spy balloon radio signals and and taken the balloon down while broadcasting the all OK signal.  Let china think their balloon was flying over the Canary islands before it failed.

Or if the encryption was cracked, send the Chinese a looping video of that chick getting her butt hole tattooed.

FTA : "If you pick up something on the street, you should return it to the owner, if you know who the owner is,"

Right, but you don't just return it to whoever says it's theirs. You ask them to accurately describe the contents. I'd like to hear what equipment they think is necessary for a weather balloon of which they seemingly had no intention of warning other countries as it drifted out of their control.
