(Daily Star)   Let's have a look at another Russian piece of ingenuity, a train with jet engines on top that could travel at 220mph. Coal burning for sure (possible nsfw content on page)   (dailystar.co.uk) divider line

I would be happy with a coast spanning rocket jet train. I'll bet with a couple of 747 engines, we could get up to mach 1 at least.

The Soviets said that if their tracks could take it, their train could have hit 220mph.

And if my aunt had wheels, she could have been the fastest train ever or something.

I'm assuming this was the inspiration for Snowpiercer.

"if their tracks could take it, their train could have hit 220mph"
I'll bet if they put those engines on something that didn't require tracks at all, it could go even faster than that

They're refurbishing it (Well, scraping off any of the non-structural rust) to send it to fight in Ukraine?

The US saw your theoretical 220mph jet-powered locomotive and made one that actually achieved 255mph.

The Soviet Union once designed a train loaded with jet engines that could reach 220mph, in a bid to rival US railways during the Cold War.

Why would they want to "rival" the US when it comes to the speed of a farking train? Did they think we were going to race them some day? No. Did it matter that a train in the US might travel a bit faster than a train in Russia? Not at all. I'm calling bullshiat on this whole thing.

Bullet trains without jet engines can already go about that fast now.  Sometimes rocketry is not the answer

Eh, not so fast les Americains et les Russes!  Mighty FRANCE had its own rocket trains too, eh bien?

Yeah, not particularly useful if all y'all don't develop the tech.

Per Wiki, TGV's record is 357.2 mph, China's high speed rail 302.8 mph, and Shinkansen maglev has the overall record at 375 mph.

Never underestimate the power of Russian insecurity resulting in the creation of dumb, useless crap to "show up" the West.

*does some googlin'*

the not-insignificant chance taking a digger into water at 350mph does not seem like the best idea.

/this one time, at water skiing camp...
