This is one thing I never understood about PC manufacturers. Why the fark do they put stickers all over laptops? Stop. No one wants it. It looks like shiat. You wouldn't sell a car this way why would they think people would want stickers on their laptop much less a $5000 one?

I wouldn't have it on any car I buy either, and it would be in the contract to void the agreement if its present upon pickup/delivery. Additionally, they aren't allowed to change the license plate frame at each service either.

I'm old and dumb, and I'm not getting something here -- what does it mean to have a game put out more FPS than the screen's refresh rate?

It means you can stop trying to improve your FPS and start spending your dollars on more RGB to achieve true gaming supremacy.

A "gaming" laptop requires a specific set of specs to understand what you are buying.

Like most gamer rigs we want to see FPS in a variety of games at a variety of settings.
HOWEVER as a laptop this needs an additional stat to truly understand what you are getting.
FPS over time vs. fan noise levels.

Are you taking that to the LAN? Are participating in a massive hours long raid? Do you like many gamers play for 2-4 hours straight?
Well, what's the FPS in that laptop after 30 min? after 60? after 120?, 3 hours of raid later what's the FPS?
And what amount of jet engine fan noise are we tolerating to get that?

What? Every car ever is covered with logos, makes, models, and equipment lists. They all say "4x4", "Hemi", "Fuel Injected", "DOHC", "SHO", etc. Even the dealers put dealer stickers all over them.

To use the full potential of the monitor.

A very broad overview is that if the FPS is lower than the refresh rate the most it can display are the FPS being rendered. If your setup can push out more frames than the refresh rate though, then your monitor can perform up to its max refresh rate.

I like to try and get as close to my refresh rate as possible. I'm on a 144hz monitor though, so on the rare game that my CPU/GPU can push more than 144hz I try not to overshoot too much - I'd increase my detail settings until I get right down to around 144FPS.

Stickers are common on laptops. Helps to distinguish yours from the bunch of otherwise-identical ones at a conference or in a corporate meeting room.

But those are stickers you choose for yourself, not ones which the manufacturer supplied. I agree that those are trash.

I had a boss Alienware system once, until the day I opened the screen and the hinges just snapped off, which depowers the screen forever.  It was over two years old so now I have a $2500 doorstop.

Bought a cheap Lenovo at Best Buy for around $900 after that, it's been going two years with no problems, even if it explodes at 36 months, was still a better purchase.

It's to point out their focal points when a shop unboxes one and puts it on display. Rather than have a "display" SKU sent to every shop, they just slap the stickers on all of them and have one SKU.

I think there's some small competitive advantage for esports players, but won't really matter to you and me and normal mortals. Basically, if it mattered to you you'd probably already know the answer.

If you're driving a LOT of frames more than your monitor could display anyway it's a waste, but getting up to the amount to max out your refresh rate isn't a bad thing. Generally speaking, it's good to be able to drive slightly more FPS as your monitor can refresh, for the smoothest experience. Having variable refresh rate tech like Freesync or Gsync in your monitor can also help with tearing and such too.

Chiming in here that my asus vivobook has been going for 4 years.  it was...less than 600? lightweight, SSD, and added RAM to put it at 16gb.  it's been absolutely fine, obviously not for all things gaming but the light weight was a huge selling point.

Did replace the battery though, and I doubt by the time it dies I'd be able to find another battery as it was somewhat challenging to find one already.

I have more than once been tempted by MSI, to the point where I actually purchased them. Both of them ran way too hot, and short of using them inside of a walk-in freezer they would go thermal under heavy load.

This thing would probably burn a hole in a table.

That was a thing in the days of CRT televisions or monitors displaying an interlaced signal. It took two screen updates before you saw the whole frame.

Yep, mobile RTX 4090 is basically a half frequency desktop RTX 4080, which has about 60% of the hardware of a desktop RTX 4090

So should get roughly half the performance of an actual 4080, or like 30% a desktop 4090.

I haven't watched the video, but I'm expecting it would get like 50% of a desktop 4090 because a desktop 4090 is more likely to bottleneck other hardware like the CPU and not actually hit its full performance.

You pretty much nailed it as at lower resolutions, they can be a bit close due to the CPU being the limiting factor. But as the resolution scales up the gap between the desktop 4090 & the laptop "4090" can get quite large.

If anyone starts bragging their laptop has a 4090, they should get this reply:

The battery life, while not what I would call "good," was better than I expected it to be.

If race to idle is a new concept to you then reviewing laptops is simply not in your wheelhouse. Modern machines only power up x86 cores for a small fraction of the display refresh period during productivity workloads, meaning the power hungry bits are off 90 percent of the time in such scenarios while a tiny microcontroller listens for mouse/touch, keyboard and network activity. The NVIDIA GPU in this machine likely on powers up when an application is running that can benefit enough to merit its power consumption, and likely not at all when running on battery power.
