The Air Force gets free advertising, so they may actually be paying the NFL.  It would not surprise me one bit to find out that is the case.  We're talking about billionaires here, money is a sickness for them.

The jets won't have had maintenance in months, since the pilots will claim the mechanics are always trying to "upsell" them.

Flyovers use training flight hours. So the cost of the flights have been accounted for already.

2023-02-08 12:57:48 PM
Has anyone come in yet to complain about the supposed costs of the flyovers, ignoring the fact that pilots use these events to satisfy training and flight hour requirements, so the money would be spent anyway?

Having never been a military aviator, my one question in that regard is always - do the flyovers satisfy all of the various maneuvers/scenarios that would be covered by/during a non-flyover training flight? That is, "Is the quality of hours/training equivalent?" If "yes," then by all means carry on.

Military aviators put in 150-200 hours a year, and there's a number of instructors screaming at the DoD that it's not enough.  A chunk of those hours are what they call "drilling holes in the sky" - flying for the sake of flying.  It's part of how units maintain readiness - air and ground crews need the practice, the repetition.

Flyover missions require specific approaches and time-on-target coordination over populated areas.  So these missions accomplish more than a crew spending a day on a sortie where the aircraft takes off, spends an hour in various holding patterns, and comes back down.

from the "small world" file....former neighbor is either the CO or XO of the Luke AFB Navy contingent (meaning, there's no way he isn't involved with this evolution).  He said he was certified to fly I think the F-18, but "just" to fly it, as his combat certification had lapsed (just googled him;  he's the CO).  He could recertify but he was moved into a leadership position, not a active, first line combat pilot role.

i asked the difference and he, as i recall, basically said there's a minimum competency to fly it, but the combat thing, based upon the environment (desert, carrier/ocean, etc., is a whole other animal.

/cousin's husband, whom i've never met, is an F-35 pilot, currently stationed somewhere in Florida.

Mrtraveler01: Is the roof of the stadium even going to be open to see it?

Phoenix resident.......I'd be shocked if it was closed.  the event is as much of a tourism ad, and the forecast is 67 and sunny that day.

the first 1-2 months of the season, when in Sep/Oct it can be 95+, the roof is pretty much always closed.  once fall comes, mid Oct/Nov, it's usually open.  it is quote unquote "chamber of commerce" weather, so yeah, no way the roof is closed.

It's surprising how many idiots figure the Navy has two female pilots and the AF three, and only due to quotas just like the black pilots, etc.

This year's Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs will be played with an open roof at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., if the weather allows it, according to an NFL spokesperson. The weather for Super Bowl Sunday calls for the temperature to be in the 60s for kickoff with less than a 10 percent chance of rain.

looks like most likely, unless the weather changes
