Marketing would never just lie to us!

I mean, I'd be willing to try it, but I won't be shocked if it falls short of the real thing.

We've had Krab sticks for sushi since the 70's. Granted that use a combo of fishy bits, plants, flavorings, and 'meat glue to hold the fish stick together. It's not new science.
I'd be interested how this tastes and cooks up and if it avoid seafood allergies.

optikeye: Krab

It's basically whatever they pump out of fishing trawler bilges, strained and extruded into sheets, and splashed with some reddish tint here and there.

And it's not half bad.  I shred it in a food processor, add some mayo, a dash of Old Bay, garlic powder, a little yellow curry powder, let it sit for a few hours to marinate, and serve it on toasted slider buns, and it's quite tasty.

Does it even come close to replacing real crab?  No.  But, for what it is, it's pretty decent on its own.

2023-02-08 12:32:04 PM
Did they also recreate the fishy taste and mercury levels?

There was a time krab was haddock. Now they get more selling it as they plain haddock

I'd try it.

I'm Alaskan so half my diet is salmon anyway.

Yep, if they can help me not shut down over the iodine levels, this would be fantastic.  And if the price is at all competitive, they can start taking my money today.

'Eat this overly-processed faux salmon.' - 'B-b-but...'

Eh, I'd give it a shot.  It looks decent.  I doubt it would fool me into thinking it was real salmon, but it might be good in its own right.

I doubt it make an effective salmon nigiri though.

Like most companies working on plant-based food alternatives, New School Foods won't go into detail on how its faux salmon is manufactured.

Well, first you build a salmon farm...

I want to see how it looks seared and cooked medium.

I wouldn't mind Salmon Mousse right now.

Slightly unrelated, but recently at work all of our labels started to carry an allergy warning for fish and shellfish.

How the flying fark could bread, rolls, cookies, pies and cakes POSSIBLY carry a risk of seafood allergens???????

"Tastes like... despair!"

If you want vegetarian/vegan food to be more palatable, just make it so it tastes good without trying for a simulacrum of meat/fish. I've been to vegan Seders and Thanksgivings where the repast was delicious and they didn't try for "duck flavored and shaped tofu". Well-seasoned cashews with a savory spiced pumpkin soup make for a satisfying meal. I'll probably sear and broil a ribeye the next day, though.

Either they don't want to be liable for anything or someone transitions between the bakery and the meat shop whenever they're needed?

2023-02-08 3:08:32 PM
The only thing that's going to matter is the price. I don't care how realistic the replica, if it can't replace the original at a price near (or, ideally, below) the original, it's not going to succeed. As it stands right now, plant-based meat substitutes have cratered as a business. Impossible Foods & Beyond Meat have imploded.

New School Foods is on a media blitz because they managed to get seed funding, but there's no discussion yet as to availability or price. Until that happens, it's a lovely bit of PR and nothing more.

They don't keep a 'kosher' type kitchen. While you have cutting boards that cooked fish may 'touch'.
It normally just gets a wipe down with a wet towel, before that same cutting board is used for slicing a hummus sandwich.

For people with severe seafood, and nut allergies. Even using the same knife or cutting board (that you just used a kitchen towel to wipe 'clean') can can cause a anaphylactic shock .

For our friend with seafood allergies when we go to the teppanyaki place...we let them know...and it's a compleat 'reboot' of the table for his order. (tho they have that down, veggies first and not even using the same knife on shrimp and his chicken and veggies)

Every time they come up with a new healthy alternative to virtually any food, it ends up being just as bad for you or bad in some different way.  If this is everything they claim, it'll probably cause cancer or a condition known as hot dog fingers.

I'm a carnivore, but I do occasionally enjoy vegan and vegetarian meals.  It's amazing how good they can be and they don't have to pretend to be meat to be delicious.

I don't care if it's good or bad. If something with a brain didn't die for me dinner it's not allowed to look or taste like meat. 'Cause I DON'T WANT IT TO. Your plant crap has to look like it. Margarine has to be colored blue or green.

this isn't even supposed to be healthier! it's supposed to be "almost as healthy on one metric, the omega 3s" this was invented to "end animal suffering." this isn't about health, it's more about PETA

way to sarcastically miss the point. like ultra processed fake meats? cool, eat them. but the market has clearly shown that people DON'T much like them, which is fine too.

the point is to glorify actual veg and other meat substitutes like tofu or seitan, maybe even good ol' TVP....

if you can't make a good veggie based meal without modern fake meat you aren't a good cook. and though i'm loathe to admit it, you ARE a very good cook, YOU could make a curry or some african dish that absolutely glorifies the veg ingredients.

so missing the point isn't funny. sorry frog guy.

That looks super tasty.  Wife's family is from up that way, may have to make a trip.  Honestly unless it's an Indian place I typically don't go to vegetarian/vegetarian heavy restaurants because mushrooms.  Mushrooms in frickin everything. Please stop putting mushrooms in every friggin sauce or dish for the love of god. Obviously there are things without mushrooms, but the ones with mushrooms always sound way better. Until you get to that part.

But.  Y'know.  Indian food otherwise, so, still a win.

I don't really care.  I lean towards carnivore compared to omnivore.  But I like to try new things.  I just want it to be cheaper and be easier to handle than sashimi grade real fish. Sashimi fish has too short of a lifespan.

I'm not sure what your saying here. Yes I know 'immitation' meat can be a problem.

But "Veggie" Burgers have been around since the 60's and 70's...and Veggie Hot Dogs too.

Are those 'fake meat' because of the form factor...a 'hot dog' a 'veggie burger'.
Does that providence push any 'veggie burger' into 'fake meat'.

Also the product is being marketed as a meat alternative that mimicks traditional meat.
Just like the veggie burgers that have been on the shelfs since the 60's.

Why is this product causing you problems? While Morning Star Farms Veggie Burger is not?

Black bean burgers kept me going after the lone star tick incident.

Have I touched em since I got over it? Once or twice.

Definitely went back to real burgers like a fat kid at a buffet.

Best one though was a Bar in Minnesota with quinoa

True about plants being delicious, but there's nothing wrong with simulating flavours and textures of meat using not meat.  Think of it this way... if I like Salmon, but I don't like the impact of Salmon farming and wild catching, and don't want the mercury and micro plastics associated with eating actual fish, then a plant based product that simulates Salmon quite well (never perfect but that just comes down to what you choose to focus on, what you like or what you don't) has a very good purpose in the food market.
