Fun fact: if you go to the site of his death, near Paso Robles, it's actually in the wrong location by a few hundred feet or something.  Because they changed the route of the road a while back, but kept the sign on the road.  And now they are changing it again I read.  So it's basically a location kinda lost to history.

He didn't have a 92nd birthday, he died 70 years ago.

That's what happens when you die. You stop having birthdays.

You don't need to ignore it. You can remember it.  "Let's remember James Dean on his 92nd birthday."

But wishing a happy birthday to someone who is dead just doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me. Doesn't that just sound really weird?

But I am autistic so maybe this is just one of those things I just don't get,

Yeah, not even remotely the point.  Most people want their lives to matter or to be remembered in some way or another.  They want to know that people will do things like wish them happy birthdays, or just whatever.  I mean this is kinda obvious.

Remembering those who have passed is one thing, wishing them a happy birthday, especially when you continue to add to their age, is just dumb. Like it or not, once you die you stop having birthdays and you stop aging.

You do understand that these people don't actually believe he is still alive?  Calling it a birthday is very simply recognizing the anniversary of his birth, in honor of him, and there's nothing wrong with that.  You're just calling it dumb because you don't understand the intention.

No, that is exactly why it is dumb. Because instead of wishing a dead person a happy birthday, which is beyond pointless and silly, you can actually just correctly phrase the intention. "Let's remember James Dean on the 92th anniversary of his birthday".

Yeah, I can understand major anniversaries or birthdays. "She would have been 50 today" or "It's the 200th anniversary of his death" make sense. But otherwise, why both.

That's what "happy birthday" means to these people.  Like the only dumb thing here is refusing to see that it's the same thing to them in this context.

He was a potent antidote to toxic masculinity at a time when it was sorely needed. He gave a face to a type of angst and frustration that we had not seen on film for that generation.

He brought attention to a style of acting that influenced so many other artists in so many films. A lot of 70s films in particular would have been very different without actors accessing that level of vulnerability.

And he was cool AF.

And for those who don't understand why.people wish happy birthday to a dead person, you don't have to.

You know,,,when these threads happen no one (or almost no one) is really wishing these dead celebs a happy birthday. It's just an expression (and excuse) used to remember someone famous on their bday.

You should be more concerned about people saying, "Happy belated birthday!" It's totally wrong. The birthday isn't belated, the greeting is. So the proper way to say that would be, "A belated 'Happy Birthday' to you."
