In a detailed statement posted on Twitter this week, Shams outlined how the scammers posed as possible investors, courted him over several weeks, arranged the meeting in Rome, convinced him to shift $4 million in crypto into the new Trust Wallet account, and eventually disappeared, followed by the funds minutes later.

Try not to give people your key. It is the only way they can get into your wallet.

Not worried at all, because I'm not dumb enough to buy into the crypto ponzi scheme.

This one is not the fault of crypto. The dude who got ripped off was stupid enough to sign into a device and they stole his password. It would be no different than somebody leaving their Paypal signed in on a public device. Admittedly with less protection than Paypal offers and far less efficient than Paypal, but it's a fair comparison.

I'm 100% cool with mocking magic internet beanie babies for sucking. This is just one of those cases where the tech didn't fail. The user did.

If they had a hardware wallet running the Trust app and it was stolen, there must be some proximity hardware wallet exploit in the wild, which is bad news.

I don't understand. Code is law and the code says he transferred those coins. So how can they be stolen?

The article doesn't really make it clear that they logged into a public device. The article states that the thieves merely took a photo of the Trust Wallet app, so apparently that app is displaying enough for the thieves to empty an account. Despite the app not showing private keys or seed phrases.

I felt that way at one point, as I reasoned that no one would put money into this horseshiat who wasn't a trust fund baby or some other kind of asshole who doesn't have to respect money.
But I have learned, to my dismay, that actual working people with families, have been conned into this scheme, and have lost their hard-earned fortunes on it.
And I can't be smug about that.

Intrepid00: I don't understand. Code is law and the code says he transferred those coins. So how can they be stolen?

Well, because your initial assertion is based upon a false premise.
You see, code is not law - it's just some f**king numbers in a computer that anybody's dog can change or erase any time they want.
Cryptocurrency literally does not exist, in any real sense, like a turnip or an Oldsmobile does.
It's more of an abstract concept, like "Donald Trump's sense of personal honor".
The suckers who end up holding the bag when it finally ruptures are going to lose everything they have invested in it. It will literally be worth real, mathematical Zero.
The really stupid are telling themselves that it won't be them, that they are smarter.
Most of them won't be.

It had to have something to do with "taking a picture" of the screen. That was an odd enough request that it stood out to the mark. So either information was taken from the image or it was just an excuse to get the phones closer. My guess would be a combination of account info from the image and some type of back door into Trust Wallet.

Perhaps there's a flaw where they can sniff the password over WiFi, which is why they want them to transfer the money whilst sitting next to them. In that case a VPN would have protected them.

Connecting to public WiFis without an VPN is a bad idea if you're accessing your bank etc.

I understand people are butthurt they didn't make a fortune when they had the chance.

Myself, I mined Bitcoin when they were worth 2USD. I could easily have mined 1 per day, but the despite having free electricity at my dorm room, the noise from my graphics card annoyed me. And besides I was crunching F@H for Stanford. Then I formatted my harddrive with the 7 Bitcoin I had on it (I didn't care about losing 14USD worth).

I'm not butthurt though, or call people more lucky than me, or feel the need to call them names.

Thanks. Its also the truth, and more real than those people who "could have invested in Microsoft".

A lot of us that were involved in Folding@Home tried out mining Bitcoin, since setting up the client was something that was natural extention to what we already did.

I think "taking a picture" was a red herring and the scammer needed an excuse to pull out his phone and run some hack that needed to be in proximity to the wallet.

Just because they said they were taking a picture doesn't mean they actually did. That said, it is trivially easy to make a phone app that runs other code.

What's there to be butthurt about?  You're proof enough that "early adoption == lambo" does not obtain.  Most of the people who got in early either got out with modest gains or lost it all, as you did.

Well, losing it all kinda implies an investment. I didn't pay anything for the Bitcoins I had. Though I remember when they reached a value of 200USD, and kinda wishing I could sell them at that point. So, 1400USD at the most.

I think people ought to think of it like that, considering at what value they would realisticically have cashed out at, as to not believe they somehow lost out of millions.

Hell, ignore the scams. Look at the "ideal" cryptobro scenario, where bitcoin is adopted as a worldwide currency, uncontrollable by governments, and where all transactions are public knowledge.

This coming to pass would be such an amazingly, mindboggling terrible thing that everyone should be fighting it.
