In other words, in being a pretty "normal" speech by a pretty "normal" person delivered in an engaging way that made him seem human, it was the polar opposite of the childish, whiny, victimized, lying, conspiracy-laden slurry of MAGA effluvium that perpetually sluiced out of TFG's hoary derp kazoo.

Normal, in a president, is good.  It means shiat's getting done in a way that is dull and largely forgettable and lets everyone get on with a normal life without having to think about the insane shiat that otherwise might be going on in the White House.

This is the Joe Biden that folks wanted when he first took office. And were disappointed that they didn't get him, because he was elbow deep in the mess that got left behind. It's taken him two years of pretty much straight out work to get to this point.

Joe Biden has pretty much established his sense of humor and likability early in his career. His days in Congress honed this. He can play to, and with, Congress in ways previous Presidents just were never able to, because they lacked the relationships forged over years. He hasn't had a lot of time to use this during his term, because things were SUCH a mess, and he and his staff have been working around the clock to reverse the course of the ship of state, and try to save our economy, bring back jobs, and repair international relationships that were pretty well poisoned.

Folks wanted the Joe Biden from Obama's Presidency. And had he gotten the nod, he would have delivered. Instead, we got a guy who had to muck out the Augean Stables, and didn't complain or whine about how hard it was, he just got to work. And didn't let up until things were headed in the proper direction. The media was particularly disappointed, because after four years of Trump, they'd been conditioned for sleaze, whining, and a healthy supply of quotes and statements to pore over, every single day. Instead, Joe was deep in the office, and that allowed the GOP to set the pace with statements and press releases. And they thought that he'd never come out. And now...well, they might want to remember that Joe kicked Donnie's ass, and managed to do a damn decent job IN Congress before getting in as VP.

Joe Biden has an almost endless well of compassion, and him coming up from the inner works of the White House to finally see the sun is something that the GOP might want to be careful of. They've had a few years to forget that Joe cut up Sarah Palin and others to shreds, with a smile on his face, and song in his heart, and their current crop of malcontents and verbage spewers are not on that level of trollage. At this point, you have to wonder if the GOP is advancing MTG and the other Disposables to face the Eye of Biden, to take the fire, and maybe damage the idiots before they get ideas that they have actual power.

I'm glad to see Biden coming back to the public. He's been gone too long, and we have sorely missed him. I understand that he's been busy, and I don't begrudge him for the time he's spent deep at work. But, yeah, his affability is set to be weaponized, and I'm not sure that the GOP is truly ready for that, after years of getting used to setting the tone with Donnie in office, and two years with Biden deep in the office trying to fix their bullsh*t.

What irritates me about Slate's tone in this article is that Biden's "acting," and that it's somehow a "superpower" - that he's managed to pull off a stunning "everyperson" routine when, clearly, he's fake as hell, old as hell, and clearly can't "deliver either prepared text or ad libs with the greatest precision."

And, of course, the end, where they pretty much say "hey, this could 'carry' him in the next election!"

Assholes. It never occurs to this writer that his empathy is genuine, that he's "real-seeming" because he isn't a goddamned construct of focus groups and fascism, and that the speech has nothing to do with him getting re-elected and everything to do with actually dealing with the problems, and touting the successes, that this administration addresses at its mid-point.

Fark you, Salon. Fark you for damning with faint praise because you're trying to be "high-school-hallway-between-classes-cool." Fark you.

As with all final forms, it required at least 2-3 minutes of shouting and powering up to achieve.  Dramatic music played and wind started blowing unexpectedly as waves of power and light burst from Biden's figure.  Then everyone started speaking in Japanese with subtitle floating underneath saying things like "How can he be so powerful" and "What a fierce aura!"

It never has. But it makes it more difficult for them to attempt it, because they know they'll be bombarded with ads showing the hypocrisy if they do.

I'm not saying they won't still do it; they probably will.

But it was a trap, and they walked right into it.

I'm with you on that - but here's the difference... Biden didn't just wallow in the applause and cock his head back with a smug, shiat eating grin, no he just shouted over it and pressed on his points, or pivoted into his next one. I was rather pleased with his delivery during the applause.

The whole thing is performance.  Right down to "...the state of the union is STRONG!"  No, the state of the union is fragile, tenuous, and at very real risk of being irreparably broken by anti-democratic elements of the opposition party.  Saying otherwise is just magical thinking.

THIS. He effectively kneecapped a lot of the Republican agenda: He set up the house GOP for so much infighting over social security that will alienate senior voters and destroy campaign messaging.

Remember folks, all the GOP have is 1-Being anti-education (terribly unpopular), 2-ending abortion rights (terribly unpopular), and hating the President (who is popular). Their platform is entirely geared to riling up their base so they can commit stochastic terrorism, as the GOP seems to have abandoned Democracy at this point. They are only going to get more extreme (and stupid) from here on out.

That's Slate's SOP though.  I've learned to reflexively ignore the cynical bullshiat they couch their articles in and try to take away the little nuggets of validity they accidentally spill on their thinkpieces -- when there are any, at any rate; it's about 50/50 that any given article is worth the photons it's printed on.

Biden's speech was good.  Not amazing in the grand scheme of things but being the first SotU since kicking The Fanta Menace out of office not long after a coup attempt he instigated, it was a hell of a breath of fresh air from a president who actually gives a shiat.
