I could never get into Rick and Morty, but the people I knew who loved it were walking red flags... so the creator being accused of all this stuff wasn't massively shocking.

Reading this article, I can definitely see why some aspects of the show got a lot better in S2, and why it really started falling apart a few years later.

It's unfortunate Roiland is the voice actor for both title characters, otherwise his departure would barely be felt.

Other show sources say he'd derail pitches and interrupt with sophomoric non sequiturs like

So, they've never seen Rick and Morty?

What's weird is looking back at the comments on the show that were apparently showcasing the fight going on. The whole "classic rick and morty" vs. "the cry baby back story"

Retool the show. Center it around Jerry. Morty goes back to school. Rick lives in a nursing home. He visits on thanksgiving and christmas.

Many creative people are insane assholes. Some are violent, insane assholes.

Look at Kevin Spacey... there are so, so, soooooooooooooooo many of them.

Broken people entertain us, but there is often a lot of carnage along the way... Sometimes they hide it, other times it spills out into the open.

It's good to see it called out, because being a creative person does not excuse these kinds of things.

Maybe I'm not the target audience, but that wasn't remotely funny in any way. It's like someone produced an animation of an 8-year old's attempt at telling a dirty joke that he didn't completely understand.

I don't disagree.   He definitely needed someone like Harmon to make actual jokes and coherent stories out his "LOL I'M SO RANDOM" nonsense.

fark that, there's no link between creativity and asshollery. It's just we tend to give assholes a pass when they are useful- whether that's because they can create art that resonates or they can make billions in the game of Capitalism, or they're excellent at sportsball. You're allowed to be the worst kind of human scum if you can avoid being to obvious about it and are profitable.

Nobody goes, "Ben Roethlisberger is a broken person, but he entertained us," he was a farking rapist who was given a pass because he was good at football.

His work, which has long made comedy hay of subjects like incest and sexual deviance, was now being viewed through a different lens

Just now?  I'm always wary of people who fixate on particular violent or sexual themes because more often than not it's a warning sign.

Harmon also just has a general history of being shiatty to the people he works with. He's also apologized for that, and has worked to make amends. No idea how his progress actually is on that front, but it was what got him fired from Community, IIRC.

Yeah, Harmon's shows seem consistently farked up. He seems to own it and not run from it but other than that, it doesn't seem like anything has changed from one to the next. But it seems unfair to put Roiland's issues on Harmon. Sort of. I don't know. shiatty people attract other shiatty people is how I look at it.

anyways... Roiland needs to be loaded onto a rocket next to  John Kricfalusi, and then it needs to be launched into the sun.

Reading about some of the behind-the-scenes drama does illustrate the reasons why certain types of episodes were dropped. Most notably it's why there were never any Interdimensional Cable episodes after season 2, which seems to be the last time Roiland had any influence in the writers room. Since those episodes were mainly filler with Justin improvising little bits and sketches that weren't fully fleshed out ideas, they were easy to cut out of the loop with Dan wanting a more story-driven approach.

I wonder if Pickle Rick happened because an exasperated Dan gave in to Justin wanting to do a wacky idea just to shut him up? "Ok Justin, we'll use your stupid idea where Rick turns himself into a pickle."

Even further back, there's House of Cosbys:

RoilandTV - House of Cosbys (Full Series HD)
Youtube BbrwRcwtO_k

(The title sequence from seconds 30 to 50 will be a wee bit familiar)

Cosby hit Roiland with lawyers, and he had to stop the series.

The Doc and Marty short was Roiland's 'Oh yeah? Don't like infringement? Infringe this!" response, set with his usual maturity.

I watched it off and on and while it could be very funny, I realized I probably wouldn't want to meet any of the creators. That's usually red flag right there.

Also, I don't know how many episodes you can go through where Rick is a horrific jerk know-it-all with few consequences before you start to wonder about the people making it.

germ78: I wonder if Pickle Rick happened because an exasperated Dan gave in to Justin wanting to do a wacky idea just to shut him up? "Ok Justin, we'll use your stupid idea where Rick turns himself into a pickle."

Even more telling that the thesis of the episode was: "Jesus Christ, being a farked up nitwit isn't cool or funny, get your ass to therapy for the love of god."

Mangoose: He seems to own it and not run from it but other than that, it doesn't seem like anything has changed from one to the next. But it seems unfair to put Roiland's issues on Harmon.

I mean, it sounds like Harmon ended up distanced from Roiland pretty quick. And in general, Harmon doesn't have a history of working with problematic collaborators- just being a belligerent asshole who doesn't respect boundaries.

Uh. Chevy Chase.

This sure does seem like the same thing playing out only this time Harmon won. Which, considering the feedback from Community doesn't seem like the bad thing. But it sure does seem like he got his big series order and then turned around and threw Roiland under the bus. Now granted, Roiland deserved it but it doesn't sound like Harmon had any problems with anything until he got his big series order.

Where I work, I joined a team, who called themselves "Meeseeks". Being older than the rest of the team, i had no idea the reference.  They filled me in.  I'm open to new things, so I gave it a try. Nope.  not even a smirk on my face.  It was just as bad as that prankster show where 4 guys jump around in spastic form, bro-fiving each other.  "Walk up to that lady and tell her she has great tits!".    HE GOT SLAPPED IN THE FACE, HILLARIOUS.

His improv sucks, it's all stuttering and repeating the same things over and over.

"H-h-hi I'm shiatty mcpoopy pants! What? You don't like my name? shiatty poopy pants? W-w-w-well you're a judgemental biatch. shiatty poopy pants was my great grandfather's name, he died in the war, so how do you feel now biatch? Yeah, that's what I th-thought! S-see you in hell, biatch"

This is extremely easy to replicate and replace.

As someone who actually does improv, the Interdimensional Cable episodes were the show at its absolute worst for me. Sure, they're stuffed with zany ideas, but there's no depth to them, just goofs. Basically jokes that can't support their own weight.

He was also fired from the Sarah Silverman show, by Silverman, before it even went to air. A show, I believe, he was co-creator of. Harmon has been fairly open about himself and how horrible he can be. Which really sort of feeds into the whole "why did he play things this way?" with Roiland. It's hard to play the "both sides" argument with any sort of comfort here because it's clear that Roiland was off the deep end. I'm not saying anything these studios have done since all this came to press was wrong. I'm just wondering why it played out like this. Because, having dealt with people who learn how to be abusive without consequence, it sure seems that way to me about Harmon. But this might just be transference. So idk. Like I said, shiat people tend to attract shiat people.

yeah, IDK what Harmon's deal is exactly.  there's a point where it doesn't matter how self-aware you are about your toxicity if you just keep on doing the same things; he isn't irredeemable in my opinion but it's clear many people in his orbit have made a different decision.

Roiland was fun at first, but then he started to brag on Twitter about palling around with nazi scumbags like Kanye West and Elon Musk in an obviously ploy to glom some of their fame onto his own self.

Then soon after that R&M episode about the Schezwan sauce and McDonald's gifted him 2 freshly-made gallon jugs of the stuff, he started making mooch demands for things like an 80 rock key-tar and other items. He went from "I'm Justin Roiland and I hope to be famous one day" to "I'm Justin Roiland! Kiss my ass and give me free swag!".
