Pilsners are lagers. But not all lagers are pils.

What passes for IPA these days is yuppie malt liquor. Mind you I'm not complaining, but I don't see low ABV pilsners taking the crown anytime soon.

Try Czechmate out of Red Lodge Ales if you can find it.

Indeed we are and yes it is. I like a well brewed lager as much as a well brewed ale. It all depends on what I'm jonesin' for and what else is on the menu.

I live in IPA Central and can find everything from Saisons and Lambics to Weissbeer, Gruit, and Kolsch produced within 20 miles of home. Tripels? Yep. Stout, porter, and pilsner, too. The only thing thin on the ground are the Bock family

Ugh, IPA's. Nasty stuff. I've never been a regular beer drinker, but I could never fathom what the big fuss for it was.   Pilsners and lagers at least don't make me wince on first taste.

I used to turn up my nose at lagers and pils and then a new brewery opened in my neighbourhood that focused on them and I have done an about face.  Their lagered beers are light and sweet up front with a subtle, rolling bitterness afterward.  It's nice to drink a different sort of beer with character and not just sugarwater.

I agree, but it's nice to have a choice beyond: IPA, IPA, IPA,IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, IPA, industrial lager, IPA, ...

I like porters, stouts and those very rare occasions when a brown or red is available. Planning to make a batch of a Rogue Mocha Porter when the weather gets a bit better.

I love IPAs, especially ones where a slight bitterness is balanced against fragrant citrusy hops with just enough malty carmel flavor to give it some body. The balancing act is key. A lot of brewers overload with hops during the boil, and overcook them, so you end up with too much bitterness.

I buy varied types of beer because I like beer, but the beer that is almost always in the fridge has been labatts (a pilsner) for a long, long while. For the cheaper of the beers out there, it's not bad. I did notice a difference in taste lately, depending on whether I bought it in PA or NY.

New wave American brewers are so overstated with no finesse.  There's no smoothness or understatement or refinement when it comes to lagers.  Overkill with hops is just covering up a variety of sloppiness.

Is this the thread where I say my preferred style of beer is superior to yours?

The joke is on you, I like almost every kind of beer (no sours, thanks).  Heck, a couple of times a year, during Atlanta summers, a cold Budweiser or 3 goes down just fine after cutting the lawn.  What's that?  Bud's are pilsners you say??

I've worked for a German company for 18 years now, so I'm a bit of a Pils snob. 99.9% of all American 'Pilsner' is absolute crap. Unlagered mistakes that get lumped into the category.

BunchaRubes: The joke is on you, I like almost every kind of beer (no sours, thanks).

Same.  They're not my favorite, but I enjoy a good sour as well.  I also apparently live in the only area where IPAs don't dominate the beer list.

Variety? Everywhere around me is doing endless IPAs and fruited sours. I've got one amazing Belgian bar near me with some good German bears but that's it

You should ask them if they decoction brew those lagers. That and the aging properly really help.

My first taste of beer was Miller High Life. Alondra park in LA County in the late sixties. Thanks grandpa!

Im not big on fruit and/or sour in beer, but a pinch of salt can do wonders. In low doses sodium adds a non-sweet and non-bitter body and smooths out the edges. It's the difference between seltzer water and club soda.

I put a small pinch of salt in my coffee in the morning along with a little Turbinado sugar and a good blast of half&half. It does exactly what you've described above.
