The Gazette riles Colo Springs residents on a regular basis. I can't recall any time when there has not been some real or perceived scandal, threat, debacle, crime, with all of the attendant letters from busybodies. Everybody cares, but strangely, nobody there can really be said to have a "stake" in this stuff.

The Springs is a weird place and it always has been. It is a bizarre nexus of Tesla, Heinlein, the AF Academy, the Olympic Training Center, NORAD, Ft. Carson, Megachurches, The caves in Manitou, Pikes Peak.

But biker gangs, dive bars, and ranch and horse people living out in the forest. Plenty of that too.And lots of suburbia.

My guess is that someone is casting SEL as mind control or humanism, which they feel should not be taught in schools. Just as meditation and yoga are anti-Christian, etc. The people who actually use public schools are mostly in favor of it. All of the busybodies and home-schoolers want to tell educators what to do. The usual.

If an instructor lacks proper experience or training, she said, the programing could veer into critical race theory teachings on social justice and equality. Liu further described SEL as a behavioral psychology tool to transform children's core values and attitudes."

ROFL

Colorado Springs is like one of the most conservative parts of the state. Hell, last time I was there in 2019 they didn't have any dispensaries selling weed.

Parents are terrible. Especially with their own children. Do you know how many parents get steaming hot mad at the teacher when their children bring home a bad report card?

Oh wait, Colorado Springs doesn't zone for recreational dispensaries, because they're weirdos.

Parents have never been a thing. Teachers don't know about teaching, parents can't parent, and don't even get me started on the things that workers don't know about their own jobs.

Go to any school board meeting and you're likely to encounter someone screeching that SEL is really a sneaky way for "groomers" to turn students into CRT-loving, Fauci-worshipping transgender communists.

It seems unnecessary, children do not need to be taught how to exist in their own thoughts. They should spend that money teaching kids how to spot predatory behavior in other people. We aren't doing our kids any favors controlling so much of their childhood.

Political and religious conservatives share this underlying belief: There is no right action in this world except that action which benefits you and those exactly like you. Any attempt to understand "the other" will lead to the weakening and eventual murder of you and your tribe. Thus do they hate and fear SEL.

Teachers also use the time for "Random Acts of Kindness" lessons, which helps "schools create a culture of kindness,"

*gasp*

If an instructor lacks proper experience or training, she said, the programing could veer into critical race theory teachings on social justice and equality.

Oh, no! They might accidentally teach our babies about justice and equality! How dare they interfere with our efforts to groom them into becoming the same sort of monsters that we are?

It's not just limited to America either. When I worked in the school system, my school district embraced a lot of the ACE teachings for working with kids who had suffered trauma.

big pig peaches: Are "parents" not a thing anymore?

From TFA -- School counselors say SEL programming has only become more important since COVID-19 sent kids home for extended periods of time, depriving them of socialization skills that typically develop at their respective stages in life.

"A lot of them came back with super low compassion," Bristol said, citing survey data collected from students after returning to in-person instruction.

Students had for more than a year been taught to avoid touching others. Masks further complicated matters by obscuring a person's face, making it hard to interpret what emotion they might be feeling.

For a year they were at home. Their parents did not help them learn compassion or empathy, since they came back with less of an ability to display those things. Thinking back on my own youth, those were skills that I learned from social interaction, much more than from anything my parents ever taught me. And let's be honest, some parents aren't particularly gifted with compassion or empathy in the first place, so expecting them to teach those things to their children is a stretch.
