So when should we expect a movie where a Chinese company buys an American plant and Michael Keaton plays the part of the American guy who helps the Chinese company learn about America and its culture while learning about the Chinese and their culture?

A lot of it was generational thinking.  This is best portrayed in Back to the Future Part III, when 1955 Doc derisively says the circuit board fried because the parts were from Japan, while Marty says all the cool stuff is made there.

I saw a docu about the Chinese/US glass plant back east somewhere in the midwest. It was well done with both sides talking and no narrator. In the end it didn't work out because both sides were assholes.

Broken clocks and all that.

They're not wrong, they probably came to that conclusion the wrong away around though.

China has been actively hacking us and our industries through state sponsored hacking groups, opening covert police, military, and Intel locations on our soil illegally and intimidating Chinese Nationals and expats.

If you work in the tech industry, especially security, doubly especially if your clients are military contractors you'd know that it is a constant battle.

The Chinese government is a threat and have been acting like they're at war with us for a while.

Yes, because the F-22 is a one-shot expense just like the AAM it fired so it adds to the total cost of the shoot-down. The word is filled with fatheads willing to listen to other fatheads just as long as they vote for the same party.

Yeah, no. If we were ever to go to war with China in any real sense, not any sort of soft-power diplomacy dance, the first thing we'd see would be Amazon and Walmart imploding almost simultaneously.

That shouldn't be taken as "it'll never happen," or "it should never happen" in anything but the painfully-idealistic sense that no war should ever happen, but just that we sure as fark wouldn't keep such massive trade relations open during anything we could honestly call a war. fark, you expect two countries at war to pay for each others' munitions? Pull the other one!

the threat the Chinese Communist Party poses not only to our way of life, but to our very lives and livelihoods.

My god, they really do want it to be 1950 again, don't they. Are they going to start talking about "ChiComs" and "Yellow Peril" again? Inscrutable Orientals?

The Chinese want one thing: money. And they already have all of ours in one way or another. All the intel they need they get from embedded assets, hacking, and spies. Or overflights from satellites which they are plenty good at making. We have nothing in America that they want or need; and they hardly want to "destroy our way of life" since they need consumers to consume cheap gewgaws and widgets produced in their slave-run factories. When you have 1.5 billion workers, those factories have to run around the year.

Settle down. If you want to win a war against China, stop buying cheap crap. Pay off our loans. Their economy would crumble like cheap fiberglass.

This thread seems to forget that the Biden administration hasn't just kept the sanctions begun by Trump but ratcheted them up even further. We and most of our allies are forbidding the transfer of semiconductor tech to the Chinese, and even forbidding our citizens in that industry from working there. We may not be in a shooting war with China, yet, but we're definitely in an economic one.

Sorta. With Japan it was mostly economic might. And they weren't wrong then as Japan's had a massive advantage in manufacturing and technology over American unions and zero competition tk that point. Then, the collapse happened in the 90's. And nothing was the same in Japan ever again. They lost a lot of economic power, and the big Japanese threat with Hondas and Sonys being in every home suddenly seem so quaint as Zenith brand electronics and Chevettes lost popularity.

With China? Completely different ball game.

Secret Police stations to go after Chinese dissidents on American soil, even if they aren't the only nations to do so, they are the only openly hostile nation and not considered an ally to do so:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-63671943

We even had to stop them setting up a secret spy bases to intercept nuclear codes with their 5G telecommunications towers: https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/07/23/politics/fbi-investigation-huawei-china-defense-department-communications-nuclear/index.html

Buying livestock land to spy on military bases next door:
https://www.agdaily.com/news/chinese-farmland-grabs-us-bases-simply-economic-or-strategic/

Speaking of livestock land, did you know China controls most of the meat packing industry in the US? Most of your meat consumed comes from China. The other major player is from Brazil.
https://revealnews.org/article/how-china-purchased-a-prime-cut-of-americas-pork-industry/

Japan didn't just outright buy controlling stake in entire industries, they weren't a hostile power engaged in theft and cyber attacks that tried to steal from the US government and private American corporations. And they keep doing it because they know we won't do anything in response. Because when we do they will want to play the aggrieved victim. This is also all after the fact that American companies establishing manufacturing bases over there had to give away technological know how in IP and patents to Chinese owned and operated companies. You didn't think Huawei and Xiaomi brands which were the equivalent of Nokia flip phones a few years ago suddenly caught up to Apple iPhones in features and tech because of good honest competition did you? Xiaomi is basically becoming a Chinese Samsung/LG. It's why there's typically some random Chinese company who's managed to cut the cost of production down on a high end item while sacrificing none of the performance, and selling for peanuts but performing exactly the same as a similar Japanese/Korean/American branded item for hundreds of dollars more.

it's not just xenophobic "yellow panic" ideas, it plays a part in it I'm sure. But then, Chinas behavior deserves some xenophobic "yellow panic" reactions as a foreign power operating independently of government oversight in our nations borders, often times believing they were above the law.

I have read literally hundreds of Chinese webnovels, and it's definitely not just an economic conflict. The Chinese people (in China) are incredibly xenophobic and racist, and they can't stand that their greatness isn't recognized. What European countries did to them wasn't cool but they are doing the exact same thing to Africa right now.
