His treatment of Manuel was not exactly woke.

I feel there's this point where John Cleese crossed over into hating-wokeness and other forms of conservative idiocy, but it was very sudden.

He wasn't always like that.

....was he?

The guy who played Manuel was German, he said he used his own awkwardness and misunderstanding things when he first came to England for the character.  Of course the Manuel character would never go over well these days.

Basil: "So that's two eggs mayonnaise, a prawn Goebbels, a Hermann Goering, and four Colditz salads ... no, wait a moment, I got a bit confused there, sorry ... I got a bit confused because everyone keeps mentioning the war, so could you..."

German: "Will you stop talking about the war!"

Basil: "Me? You started it!"

German: "We did not start it."

Basil: "Yes you did, you invaded Poland..."

He's an old white dude. His opinions were probably unremarkable in his day and the community he was brought up in, but then got mildly famous and probably hasn't had anyone to tell him his opinions are dumb in the past 40 years or so. Then he got on Twitter, the internet yelled at him, and now he's got Conservative Butthurt Disease.

He's a very liberal guy in literally every single way EXCEPT for cancel culture.

Which that goes to show HOW UTTERLY FREAKING RIDICULOUS it is.

When even most liberals start calling out the far left (and far right, to be honest, both sides do it), it's time to admit your cause is freaking stupid.

/Also, he's not calling it out on himself (last I checked, he hasn't been cancelled, just far left assholes who attack him for attacking cancel culture), he's calling it out on behalf of other people who it's happened to.
//Virtually all comedians, left and right, are pretty damn united in condemning it.  As well they should.

The "I want you to call me Loretta" scene in Life of Brian hits a little different now that Britain has become TERF Island.

Reiner, who is also working on a sequel to This is Spinal Tap...

This strikes me as even weirder than the Fawlty Towers revival. Why bring back Spinal Tap for a reunion? It just won't be the same without their drummer.

I'm sure there's a lot of comedy to do with the modern concert industry, and with Spinal Tap dealing with it, but it would have to be very well written to translate to this generation.

My understanding is that the issue is that their manager dies and that his daughter inherits the contract and realizes that the band owes her one final album.  It could be pretty good or simply awful.

Let's ask Dave Chappelle how cancellation is working out for him, if he can even hear us from inside his money bin.

Or, Reiner is the type that Phil Ochs described as "ten degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally."

Dave Chapelle did a tour right after he was "cancelled" for his Trans remarks that was the highest grossing comedy tour in history.

Louis CK just sold out Madison Square Garden.

I didn't know he was related to Mel.... I knew Carl and Mel were 'friends', are they related?.... but come on... Meathead is incredibly talented.    Stand By Me is a perfectly made film... so is Misery....   When Harry Met Sally and Spinaltap, very culturally significant.  A Few Good Men? These are all time classics.

From 2018 interview with him:

"If I ever tried to do a Fawlty Towers-type sitcom again, everyone would say, 'Well, it's got its moments, but it's not as good as Fawlty Towers', so there's not much point in doing that. You have to do different things."

Then the cash showed up.

Let's not pretend Louis CK didn't lose a ton of money and a ton of fans. His artsy movie didn't come out. He lost all his tv producer jobs. He was recast in all his voicework and lost contracts and opportunities that were in the works. His comeback tour in 2018 was shiathole comedy clubs in the south, and even that was protested. All because he pulled his dick out in a hotel room after asking permission and getting it.

He got cancelled. Al Franken got cancelled. What happened is all you terminally online weirdos overreacted, which is exactly what cancel culture is. Your demand is that these people like, disappear from your perception altogether, which is entirely your problem, not anyone else's.

The WHAT, now?!?  Is that even a thing?  I'll cop to not being the most informed when it comes to pseudo-intellectual theories, but I don't think I've ever heard a reference to that one before.

And what part of that is fantasy?  That there can be alt-left groups just as easily as there are alt-right groups?  Or that liberals will call their fellow liberals out?

Let's be real: liberals and conservatives are equally capable of acting like farking clowns, and equally deserving of being called out for it.

Fair enough.  But let's also not pretend that Louis CK didn't deserve to get cancelled.  Trapping women in a room until you finish masturbating is a lot more than telling Trans jokes, and probably constitutes at least a couple of felonies he never had to face.  And now he's doing sold out performances again, after losing a little revenue.  Yah, you're right.  He's pretty much suffered as much as Jesus before his redemption.

And your suspicious omission of Chappelle's cynical exploitation of "cancel culture" BS is noted.

All these assholes who whine about "cancel culture" didn't say a word as Colin Kaepernick was demonized for peacefully speaking out against police brutality. Because, unlike Kaep, what the anti-"cancel culture" warriors actually want is a world without any accountability and consequences.
