FTFAI've come across many stories over the years of why Qwerty is the way it is. That's the one about being able to type out the word "typewriter" on one row or the idea of spreading out the vowels to slow down typists.

As 1990's chatroom veterans can attest, it's also particularly helpful to be able to type the word "erect" using only your left hand.

/ASL?

The only available punctuation on the left is an exclamation point. So...

When I think back to the courses and classes I took in high school in the 80s, I realize the most beneficial class I took wasn't the college prep or AP classes. It was Typing.

You can tell alot about how someone grew up by whether they bat with their mouse hand or keyboard hand.

I've been typing since I was 9 years old (I'm 70 now). Learned touch-typing from my mother on an old Remington. Fell in love with the IBM Selectric in typing class in high school. Actually typed so fast on it once that it jammed and the metal strip that moves the print head snapped and sproinged out the top of the typewriter. My teacher was actually impressed by that.

And the original reason for the QWERTY layout was to keep the type bars from jamming together. Mostly. Still happened, though.

Is "bat" a euphemism? Because if it is, yeah I totally use my non-dominant hand for that. The other hand works the mouse.

Yup!  I actually switch hit midway through development, with the addition of internet access.  Went from needing my left hand to hold physical media, to needing my right hand for operating a mouse.  Strange and exciting times.

Yes and no. They could have used any layout, they just needed to move the type bars around. Those weren't standardized yet either.
