TIL, people use Wyze cameras as their primary security system.

Don't use a wifi cam as your security system, it's easy to block most of them.

Do use a Wi-Fi cam with a real alarm.

Easy enough on 2.4Ghz, not so much on 5Ghz connections.  Last i checked, anyhow.

They still record to local storage if you have it installed.

Wyze devices are 2.4 only sadly.

But as mentioned, they can record locally, and the article mentions they'll still give audible alerts and such.  They just won't save to the cloud or send remote alerts.

We won't tell you more about it, particularly that if you want to disable the local storage, look around for a shoebox-sized steel safe with "Smith & Wesson" painted on it.

I have 3 WYZE cams and they all have SD cards that will record for 48 hrs regardless of "cloud" availability.

My Nest cams?  Nope.

I don't pay Wyze for their services and mine all have SD cards in them.

A handy source for free SD cards in a pinch?  Or are they inaccessible somehow?

Wyze, you pay for "security" we drop the ball!

This kind of crap shouldn't happen.

While it's more difficult on 5Ghz, if someone was determined to screw it up, they could.

Using WiFi cams to supplement a wired alarm is a much better use of resources.

Are there any good cam systems that are either PoE, can handle a PoE injector, or Power+Ethernet that I can feed on to a local VOD server? I'm not looking for enterprise class here but something above Wyze. Ring, and Nest.

It's a private home security company.

Sorry... I shouldn't have been so glib.  Honest question, though... what keeps people from just swiping the SD cards, either because they just want free SD cards or because they want to disable your cameras?

Luckily I just use my Wyze cameras to keep an eye on our cats when we are on vacation and they stay unplugged the rest of the time.

We do have one camera that is set up to capture our cats using their exercise wheel in the morning, though:

Didn't know what you meant. Some of mine aren't hidden, but not obvious

We just don't put the cameras up until we're heading on vacation because we don't want internet connected cameras turned in indoors all the time. The cat wheel is an exception because we want to see their early morning exercise routines.

I use a smart switch on mine, no power to the camera unless the house alarm is armed away.
