You can't convince me that wasn't one of Putin's bastard sons.  I mean, they gave us a side-by-side photo to compare with.

And Putin won't care one bit that a talented man who had spent his working life in service to Russia came out of retirement only to die in a completely stupid war started for stupid reasons.

And he won't care one bit that many more lost their lives before him and that many more will lose their lives while he continues this stupid war.

I know that Putin won't answer for any of his crimes so I can only hope that he dies a painful death from a rapidly disabling but lingering disease.

Putin won't last long if he becomes disabled. He'll be like the wounded old lion, target of every ambitious younger lion.

in NATO, a Major is higher ranked than a lieutenant.  However, a lieutenant general (3-star general) is higher ranked than a major general.

Is it the same in Russia?

Equivalent to one star / US Brigadier General.

And I'm using the term "equivalent" very loosely.

Certainly explains both how he could have that rank and be retired by 44.

I don't know "pudgy, receding hairline, and a permanent scowl" seems to be the look for standard issue middle age russian men. Well, elderly men given their life expectancy.

Slideshow says "...Previously Ulyanov...was a top paratrooper, commander of the elite 98th Guards Airborne Division. He went to the current war commanding a regiment of mobilized motorized infantrymen from Tatarstan."

Commanding a bunch of conscripted infantrymen from the Russian hinterlands seems like a large demotion in the first place.  Wonder who he pissed off in the chain of command.  If this guy was the equivalent of a 1-star US general, either he's on someone's serious shiat list, they're desperately short of field commanders, and/or someone at home set him up to fail and come home in a box.

I really wonder how his minions privately view their options right now. A few months back, if one of them could have offed Putin and cancelled the invasion, it's possible they might have rebuilt most or all of Russia's business dealings. But in the current state of things, the only thing crazier than continuing to follow Putin would be wanting to inherit the disastrous mess he's created. Things are just going to get worse and worse for Russia, I predict, because anyone smart enough to reverse some of their self-inflicted troubles is too smart to stick their neck out and get involved.

During the Cold War, every country that was supported by the Soviets had a huge number of generals and had massive rank inflation which I assume came from Moscow.  I suspect that hasn't changed much.

Reversing the damage to Russia is nearly impossible now.  Months ago the damage was in the order of a trillion dollars so for Russia to pay back Ukraine for the past damage would requiring doubling their GDP just to break even on the interest in 10 years. The stranger part of the economic issue is that even if all of Putin's wildest dreams came true, a recombined USSR couldn't afford to develop the oil fields, fix critical manufacturing infrastructure, and rebuild the destroyed areas even to rural Soviet standards without it taking decades.
