So you can just take the money and keep your kid enrolled in public school? Cool! Free money!

Socialism? Among red-voting Arizonians? That can't be right. They wouldn't just take free money from someone else and spend it, would they?

Huh? Who would have imagine a program that has little to no accountability would be abused in such a manner.

Rich people want ignorant slaves and religious conservatives want ignorant tithers.

That's the entire sum of GOP political goals.

"The money is going to be spent," he told the 74. "Do you want only the government to decide [what to teach], or do you want parents to decide?"

Educators, I want educators to decide. Not billybob and Jolene that are no more qualified that your average pair of sheep that figured out how to make a lamb.

Guarantee we hear great stories of the successes, while the failures just fall down the memory hole.

Kids can learn all kinds of things on trampolines. For example, gravity, Newton's first law, and first aid.

Yes, of course, the fiscally conservative thing to do is...*checks notes*...give away thousands of tax-payer dollars with little to no oversight. Well, at least your kids can say the N-word in peace at home with Teacher Mommy.

Becky Greene, a Mesa parent, has five children, aged seven to 17, using ESAs. For physical education, they all take taekwondo.

She once wondered how a parent in the Facebook group got approved for a kayak.

Capalongan said she hopes to use ESA funds to help pay for the care of her daughter Lexi's rabbit - items like a hutch, a litter box and nail clippers.

So AZ taxpayers are basically paying for homeschooler hobbies. Swell.

Not a single person from Arizona qualifies for a College education that doesn't have "clown" or "Mc" as a prefix.

The one on the left I think is Wendy Rogers, who had a big role in driving the Republican Party in Arizona straight into the ground by embracing the crazy.

I hate when children are used as photo props. Reminds me of when Desantis did the same thing when he signed his "don't say gay...I mean...parental rights" bill.

yup.

And school reform will either ban homeschooling or require regular progress checks to ensure the kids are getting an actual education.

These people are overlooking the following: education is about making sure these kids are useful members of society. Education isnt there to make parents happy.

2023-02-07 4:13:34 PM
There's reasons to be upset about this, but I'm not sure that buying trampolines is the one to get outraged about. Unless you want me to believe that physical education isn't important and/or that no public schools use tax dollars to buy trampolines for their PE programs.

Sea World is more questionable; I could see that as a sorta educational field trip (Aquarium would probably be a better sell), though my impression is generally those sorts of things are not funded within the base school budget.

She thinks standardized testing should be required for students who receive ESAs.

This is the key I think.  The state needs some way to ensure that actual education is happening, and that children are not being neglected so their parents can shake down the state for tax dollars.  If the kids are being homeschooled and test as well or better than their public school peers for a lower cost per pupil than the state can do it, then let them spend the money on as many trampolines as they want.

wax_on: So you can just take the money and keep your kid enrolled in public school? Cool! Free money!

yea, the article is somewhat vague on what is happening.

Providing ESA funds so kids can do a variety of "extra curricular" activities? Doesn't sound too bad. Your kid wants to learn cooking, karate lessons, learn theatre, programming? Sure sounds nice to have a variety of choices in the private market vs just a few offered by the school.

Level the playing field for those kids whose parents do not have large incomes to pay for those types of enrichment activities.

Yet none of the examples really spoke to how the kids are learning the 3 R's.

You think this program is failing because it is designed to support families in providing a quality education to their children.

That is not its purpose.

Its purpose is to kneecap public education by depriving it of needed funds.  After intentionally sabotaging public schools, Republican officials can then point to them and say, "See, government-run schools don't work!"  Of course, this is the exact same strategy they employ with the Postal Service, with Amtrak, and with other services supported by public funding).

They don't care how the funds they've diverted are spent.  As long as they are not going to support the public schools that need them.

How Republicans think: hey if we pay people not to send their kids to school we'll save money

This. My oldest nephew is unlikely to be able to get his GRE because the "homeschooling" he received is absolute garbage. He's a smart kid, but he's going to really have to work outside of his parent's influence if he wants to get his GRE and get into college.

ok but where will these home "schooled" kids get jobs as adults if they can't do readin, writin, and 'rithmetic? Even at my crappiest jobs you had to still be able to do some things like regular people...

Nonetheless, credit where credit is due.  It was one of the few times that Trump wasn't lying.

Not to mention the developmental / socialization issues that come from homeschooling.  Multiple kids in my family were homeschooled and they ended up way worse than me.   Yes, i was beat up, spit on, called a bunch of slurs and kids hated me.  But i still made friends along the way, lifetime connections and no way would I be anything other than resentful if I spent my childhood homeschooled.

"Lots of kids have different needs that public schools are not a good fit for,"

I know from experience that the Charter Schools will SAY they can meet the needs of those who don't fit the standard mold, but then they very much can't.  "Oh yeah, we have all kinds of experience with kids with Autism and our teachers are specially trained...blah blah blah..."  Don't believe a word of it.  Charter schools are corporations built to turn public funds into private profit...through your kids.  That's it.
