Did they use ACTUAL SIZE ROSE and LEO for tests? Because I get the feeling they had to 'hobbit up' some SFX or have Leo walk a raised sidewalk for the trolly  shots.

IMDB lists Leo at 6'0 and Kate at 5'7......now that's some hollywood math.

I'll give Cameron this much:  more guys got laid by simply tolerating "Titanic".

My fake movie isn't realistic!

*real life examples of people being dumb all day, every day*

Not real enough!

The narrative was there. Jack had to die. He showed the floating door was unstable. That's what happened. Sorry for the inconvenience.

It's fiction, so Jack and Rose could have ridden the eagle all the way to Mordor.

Cameron just has no imagination.

For the 10 people on the planet who haven't seen the film

It didn't grab my interest at the time and now the fact that I haven't seen it is more a point of pride.

I feel like pop culture's covered all the interesting parts anyways:  he draws her like one of those French girls, they have hot steamy sex in a .. car? in the cargo hold?

She does that "I'm flying Jack" thing from the masthead.

Then he dies senselessly and I'm convinced that old Rose is actually senile and made the whole thing up like the entire story of Life of Pi.

There. Saved countless hours and probably $18 but still had to suffer that goddamned Celine Dion song.

That's one of those movies where I wish everyone involved would have died.

Except for Bill Paxton. I miss him :(

Also, if you keep pissing him off, he's going to make a Sequel. So, please stop asking.

Nah. Life of Pi is like An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.  It doesn't actually ruin anything to know it's an unreliable narrator, if you're into that sort of thing, and I think it's better that you know what you're getting into so that you don't feel like you've been fed a Shaggy Dog story.

It's a good book and a good film -- I'd recommend them both.

Forgive my lack of clarity -- that article and thread is about Cameron saying that Jack *could have* survived.

It's the exact opposite of a repeat.

Doesn't change the fact that Rose is a biatch. She makes everyone listen to her boring ass hook up story and then tosses the gem in the ocean. She knew they were looking for it.

However, there were a handful of survivors that survived in the water for a reported 2-3 hours before being pulled into a lifeboat. One of them was Charles Joughin, who got really drunk just before it happened and claimed to hardly feel the cold of the Atlantic at all.

The definitive answer should be, Yes, it's possible, but strong odds are that you would perish, as many did.

The simplest truth here is that film is a communicative medium, and if the imagery you chose for the scene leads a lot of your audience to think there was no reason for a character to die, you farking up filming that scene.  "But scientifically, it works" isn't an argument; what matters is what the audience believes while viewing.

Also that if you were interested in realism, Jack would've farkin' reeked, and Rose was an absolutely horrible person both when young and old.  Incredibly self-involved and privileged in the worst way.  She's the villain of the piece.

I think the flip side is that she could have been floating on a heated yacht with a catered dinner, and he still had to die in service of the story.

Damn near everyone in the Cameron family is annoying.  James.  Kirk.  David.  Punters, the lot of them.

Cameron Crowe was okay, though.  Something of the black sheep of the family.  Or, black bird, as it were.

fmcgalaxie500: MythBusters proved

I'm gonna haveta stop you right there.  MythBusters never "proved" anything.  So many of their experiments lacked so much required fastidiousness and control as to make their results generally meaningless.  You can expect that their conclusions were right or wrong roughly 50% of the time each.  So sometimes they were right and sometimes they just weren't.

But as has already been pointed out, there are a dozen reasons why it's a meaningless argument in the context of the film.  It's a movie. This is a golden example of how MythBusters simply isn't "right" all the time and draws conclusions from inaccurate or sometimes irrelevant experiments.  But it's just a show, which is fine.  The real problem is people who worship their results as the arbiter of truth.

Jack only reeked until he got it on with Molly Brown, who made him take a bath and dress up like her son because she secretly wanted to bang her offspring. It's all there in the subtext.

As a far more realistic point of order: everyone on that ship would have reeked. Daily bathing still wasn't a thing, most people (even the wealthy) were probably wiping themselves down with a cloth most days. Having sex on that ship would literally be "putting some stank on it!"

In this case, is is plausible and it is possible that Jack, who was being tossed around in the frozen North Atlantic after  a ridiculous escape, chase, and run through the cold waters of the sinking ship, could manage to wrangle his way onto the same plank of wood that Rose was on. Or perhaps after all that and as his body was shutting down in shock his addled brain gave up and he did a noble thing by not risking knocking her off trying to get on.
It seems that many movie watchers these days have a serious problem with "see, this is where the characters (and the writers) are fools. Here's what I would do"[insert flawless plan].

Of course such people always existed but it appears that these days we are expected to take these people seriously.

When one of the boatmen is holding back a panicked crowd on the deck from loading into a lifeboat and inadvertently shoots someone and then shoots himself? I thought of that when I watched the first videos of the capitol guard stopping Babbitt on January 6th. Metaphor as you will.
