FTFA: "Zero percent. What are you preparing these kids for?" said Patterson. "Are we expecting these kids to kill off themselves? I mean, we see the number of teen shootings happening just this year."

This is obviously a really bad educational situation that needs intervention, but these kind of hyperbolic statements to media are NOT helpful and are nothing but offensive. Unless you've got some evidence "mathematical proficiency" is linked to gun violence then fark off. Or maybe comparing the ratio of guns to teens, if you want to do some math.

I saw a recent interview where they were trying take credit for "a lot of kids almost at grade level".  Of course no actual math was presented to back that up.

I will say this: the pandemic completely screwed up education for so so many kids. And a lot of parents learned first-hand that their little darlings are not perfect and that they don't have any discipline to sit down and learn.

I'm Dyslexic. Does it make you feel superior to people with Handicaps that you feel the need to correct them, or is that just the Autism speaking? I'm glad I could brighten your low self esteem.

Without RTFA (because this story has nothing to do with reading comprehension scores), I have to wonder: Are there literally zero students in those 23 schools who were able to pass the test, were there no students in their sampling of scores that passed, or is the average number of students within the margin of error of zero?

I was told there would be no math...

"These kids can't do math. You're not preparing them to buy groceries. You're not preparing them to do accounting, to count their own money. You're not preparing them to read contracts and negotiate salaries," said Patterson.

To be fair, grade school math classes don't teach that stuff even if you are performing at grade level.

You don't need to capitalize dyslexic, handicaps, or autism.

"Among the list of 23 schools, there are 10 high schools, eight elementary schools, three Middle/High schools and two Elementary/Middle schools.

Exactly 2,000 students, in total, took the state math test at these schools. Not one could do math at grade level."

That doesn't seem like they are testing everyone, even the rural schools around here have more than 100 students. Only testing one grade?

The TV show "The Wire" was a true documentary?
Probably the only fictional part was the team of dedicated detectives.

The situation is bad. But this is coming from the Sinclair Fox affiliate in Baltimore so its not surprising they're trying to protray it that way.

Sinclair has quite a track record when it comes to influencing politics in Baltimore.

Well the clear issue here is that [racial slurs] inner city animals children come from broken homes single-parent households and are [bigotry] incapable of learning. This is why white parents who already have the means to pay to put their kids in private schools care need a tax break school choice and the option to take their tax dollars where their kids have a chance. Investment in our future, not indoctrination of the past.

This is an anti-education hit piece article. "Project Baltimore" (where the results come from) is a division of Fox news and the only person they quote and re-quote and re-quote is a guy who sues the schools for "misusing public funds".

It's not that far off really. The overall state is at 22% proficient which is insanely low. Even the top county was only low 30's.
You can make fun of Baltimore but the state as a whole is failing miserably, or their standards aren't right.

Worst part is they will berate and blame teachers for the failure of their offspring even after dealing with them during the pandemic and not grasping how difficult that is times 30 or 35 children all in the same room.
Discipline and instruction starts at HOME, not in the classroom.

Probably because there are critical masses of Republicans in those areas who stymie things like property tax increases and education spending.

Baltimore is broken. Just irreversibly broken. Maryland needs to get a couple of hundred bulldozers lined up at the top of Baltimore city and just raze the city all the way down to Curtis bay. Maybe leave Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Medical center. Turn the rest of it back into forest area for 100 years and hope the rot just disappears.

Why are we making out like Baltimore is representative of all "blue cities"?

More to the point...find me a city (an actual city, not a suburb or town) that's anything but...Blue.

We have leaders who despise Science so if poor students don't do well in STEM, the only fault lies with underpaid teachers. So, the solution is to let the family of actual mercenaries take over our school system.
