Yeah, long term growth over quarterly profits?  What sort of commie crap is that?

It's not about hardship.  When a company doesn't make plan they rarely give more, that is how businesses work.

I didn't say anything bad about Nintendo.

What I'm saying is that this isn't impressive. The article frames it like "This has been a hard year, but dad-gummit, we're gonna take care of our employees first!" But again, the only thing that happened is that they made less money than they wanted to. And given how high inflation was these past years, a 10% raise isn't all this much.

I'm saying don't eat Nintendo's ass for doing what should be the bare minimum for corporations of their size to be doing.

Also, eat sh*t.

I had one boss who asked me if I had a court date coming up every time I got a haircut.  I later found out he asked the same question to several other workers.  Then I realized the other workers who had similar stories shared one thing, they were all competent.

He was paying attention, when you run a factory and all of the sudden a bunch of your best workers are clean shaven and have fresh haircuts... they're probably interviewing for other jobs.

Yeah, right, why would the article in February of 2023 identify Nintendo with publishing it's most highly anticipated game that's soon to be released and sequel to it's blockbuster selling game in the Zelda franchise? It truly boggles the mind.

They should've used a game people have heard about.

Profits down?  Gee, no new Mario game (sports and Rabbids don't count) or Zelda game in 5 years.  Where's Mario Maker 3, Odyssey 2 and Tears of the Kingdom (yes, I know it's out "soon")?  But Nintendo has abandoned Mario for some reason.

Each of the last two Nintendo systems got three or less Mario main titles. The switch has gotten more than that with the remaster.

Not sure why you put "soon" in quotes. It's May 12th.

There's also been like 13 Mario games for the Switch. Odyssey, Golf, Tennis, Soccer, 2 Mario Parties, 2 Mario + Rabbids games, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, Mario Maker 2, the Mario 3D Allstars collection, etc. Probably just barely trailing Wii for volume of Mario releases.

Since Tears is the last major game with a publishing date from them they're probably gearing up to their next system release announcement. If anything it's incredible how insanely successful they were with the Switch given it's hardware limitations.

The drop in sales were chip shortage related.

Also, Nintendo wanted to make more games featuring Mario, but he was busy getting high on magic mushrooms and he had to plunge princess Peaches' toilet. It's funny how often that comes up.

No, the entire system of debt for higher education is completely rotten from top to bottom, and should never have been in place in the first place.

They keep saying it is chip shortages, but I think it is just that it is now starting to approach saturation. You can only sell so many consoles, and the Switch is going to come damn close to that ceiling.

Eh, if they were the only one seeing a decline and were blaming chips I'd see that but it was a pretty common hardware distribution issue that effected everyone. Though yeah they've really got to be close to that ceiling, and they really need some kind of hardware boost. I don't think they're going to compete with the Steam Deck or anything but it'd be nice to be able to play something closer XBone or PS4 game fidelity.

I don't think Nintendo is in a hurry to transition to their next system, and I don't blame them. Switch sales are down, but they are still strong, and software sales are great. They could stretch out the lifespan of the Switch for a few more years if they really wanted to and still be profitable just from software sales. Launching a new system is risky, and Nintendo has a history of screwing that up occasionally.

Going to college, especially for a degree with absolutely no expected ROI is absolutely a choice.

But can't we just take about Mario and Zelda and Pokemon and new Switch hardware, and how much better more companies would be if they did what Nintendo is doing to secure their workforce and focus on long term stability?

I will point out counting 2020 or 2021 as any kind of reasonable benchmark for an entertainment platform feels pretty disingenuous. And only a SLIGHT dip in profit going from April to December of 2022 is doing pretty well coming into a normalization from artificially inflated profits due to massive surge in desire for your products.

Between Pokemon Legends, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Splatoon 3, Nintendo Switch Sports, Mario Strikers... Nintendo had a good year.

Add a few more months, Meteor Dread was Oct 2021. May this year is a new highly anticipated Zelda. I for one am very excited for Tears of the Kingdom.

Happy to see a company like Nintendo making good decisions. Good for them.

I honestly don't even need the games to look better. BotW is still pretty. Fire Emblem Engage is gorgeous. But I would like a new system to be able to handle the games a little better in cases where gameplay is affected.

For example, BotW had moments where I was trying to plan my attack on an enemy outpost from a mountaintop, but because of the short draw distance for enemies and items I would have to sneak in closer just to see what enemies were there. That kind of thing is the only reason I'm interested in the possibility of an upgrade. Otherwise, I've been perfectly happy with my Switch. It unexpectedly became one of my all time favorite consoles.

Ditto, I meant more in terms of frame rate and draw distance. I'm normally not a stickler for 60 frames a second or anything but the Switch chugs sometimes.

BOTW also has some load lag when transitioning and lots of enemies or particles or things made it stutter. And long load screen times.

Seeing it emulated at 60 or 120FPS really highlights how amazing the graphics of the game are, and how limited the Switch is. A Switch+ that could take the 30FPS to 60FPS would really make a difference.

Back on topic.  Nintendo made 100 million less in profit than last year.  They are giving devs a 10% raise in an industry that is firing people by the thousands.  If you work in software dev any year that you don't get a promotion and you get a raise over 5% is a banner farking year.  If you work for a company that misses projections by a lot you are lucky if you get a raise period.

This isn't a selfless gesture by Nintendo.  They are doing it for retention of developers, but this isn't nothing, but some of the reaction here is reason why companies wouldn't.  If you have a choice to do nothing and get no press about it or do something (but some people think it isn't enough) and get bad press, which is more appealing.  Next time Musk looks to donate 100 million to a charity he might remember the "it's not enough!" he got many places and say fark it, I'll buy another dozen yachts instead.
