Something occurred to me yesterday.  Rivendell was founded in the middle of the Second Age.  By the time of the War of the Ring, how many times had the Last Homely House rotted away and been rebuilt?  Or is it like a Ship of Theseus deal?

/someone I asked pointed out that Elrond's Ring has a preserving function, so maybe the answer is 0

Why Rivendell? Nothing fun happens there, just a bunch of conversations and meetings and naps.

Elrond himself has the immortal life of an Elf, so perhaps his ring transposes its powers to Rivendell?

In any case, I'm not a LEGO person, but I do love LOTR and I find that thing kinda 'meh'. It looks neat, sure, but to me

Yes, the explicit purpose of all the Elven rings was to slow the natural decay of the Elves and their lands so they could delay their departure. Elrond is also on good terms with the river, using it to defeat the Nazgul pursuing Frodo.

However, the Elves were also master craftsmen and a few thousand years isn't very long for them. The Grey Havens were continuously inhabited since the First Age and even a decent time after the rings lost their power. In the real world, Japan's Horyu temple still contains significant timber from something like 600AD and much of the replacement has been due to acute damage (e.g. fire) rather than slow decay.

Sure, that's lovely and all, but does anyone else miss the days when Lego created their own sets rather than just licensed movies and stuff? Stuff like M-Tron, the Aquanauts, the various pirate sets? After years upon years of licensed material I kind of find myself not giving a crap about yet another Harry Potter or Star Wars box. At first it was great but now it's all the ever seemingly produce.

They still do their own sets. They also do licensed sets.

The original sets just don't get free press. There's no lack of them, though.

I think they have a lot of castle sets right now. Also there are the creator sets and the neat things they have done to broaden their appeal like the Bansai tree.

Yup. Ninjago, Friends and City still huge ranges for them, but they're not likely to show up on something like gizmodo.

And just to show as an example, here's the categories from their online store.  All of the highlighted categories are either entirely or mostly unlicensed stuff:

It's the best location with a reason to include all nine members of the Fellowship as minifigs in one set. Plus Elrond, Arwen, Gloin and Bilbo. Sure, there's not a lot of playability, but for $500, I doubt many kids are going to be allowed to take this off daddy's Lego shelf.

I had the OG Galaxy Explorer set when I was little. Imagine my surprise when I found an updated and upscaled version at my local Costco last month. Most of the Lego original product lines have a limited lifespan. Bionicle, Ninjago and the Fairy collection are all relatively recent but I think they're all ended now, even though they were all popular and well regarded as stand alone products. They do put branding on the collections now, and they aren't all just licensed. You just have to look and see what's actually out there.

TL;DR Version:

The entire point of the Rings of Power was that magic was fading. The Three Rings allowed the Elves to maintain a shadow of what once was.

The One Ring was bound inextricably to the fate of all the other Rings. That is, as long as The One Ring survived, so did the Realms of the Elves.

By destroying The One Ring, they are destroying the last remaining scraps of what was. That's why the Elves are so somber and NOPE-ing out.

I know these LEGO sets are expensive.  But I give credit to the company for continuing it's tradition of excellent quality.  I read an article about their plastics and tolerances in manufacturing.  I'd sent it to my dad and brother who are both engineers with experience in plastic.  Both were impressed.  Dad specifically said based on the information LEGO had about the highest tolerances he'd seen, even better than some medical equipment he'd worked on.

Does anyone else miss the days when Lego just put out sets with a variety of blocks, that you used your own imagination to build whatever the fark you wanted to? Instead of a box full of the parts and instructions needed to build a helicopter, and nothing but a helicopter?

Just search for Lego Bucket. There's quite a few boxes, buckets, and things of just assorted bricks in various sizes.

But they won't make the nerdy news sites because there's no tie in, nothing newsworthy. They are just staple product.

1. They still put out boxes that are just a variety of blocks, they're sold in the "classic" category on their site. You can even buy specific pieces if you want.

2. They've sold sets for building specific things for some 80 years now (e.g., an Esso gas station).

3. There is literally no Lego set that can be used to only build one thing. If you aren't using your imagination to build whatever the fark you want, that's on you and/or your parents.

/admittedly, there are some sets so big and complex to build that I'd hate to tear them down for parts
//but most of them aren't like that
///no interest in Rivendell... but a truly massive Minas Tirith would tempt me

As mentioned above, the Classic line is basically that. Although those tend to have too few rectangular "bricks" for my taste, some of the ones coming out in March look like they might be more brick-heavy. The first picture below looks like it might be entirely rectangular bricks. It's 1000 pieces for $60.
