I'm not sure how that Legislation can break a bond covenant. (Not sure if I'm using the right term there.)

I've been looking for that issue to be addressed by Bloomberg or CNBC, but from what I read before, they would have to pay off the bonds themselves if they took ownership of the land. Because that is what it explicitly says in the legal framework/write-up/issuance of the bonds...

If anyone knows how they can get around that, please let me know. Because that is what I thought would protect them from doing this without having to pay that debt.

I think this falls under the column of "nobody's going to do anything about this, so I'm just going to do it."

There is nothing about bonds in this bill.  It is purely about governance of the Empire of the Mouse.  Currently, Disney appoints the members of the governing authority.  This law would let DeathSentence appoint them.  And then his minions would raise taxes on the Empire of the Mouse if Disney ever sassed him again.

So, in essence, they get around the "transfer" from special entity to the State of Florida (thereby transferring the debt from Disney to Florida) by staging a bloodless coup and just taking over the district as is?

Well, f*ck me. These assholes are smarter than I gave them credit for.

I'm so glad that De Santis is so very concerned about businesses being able to operate freely, without pressure from the government on controversial subjects.

IIRC from a previous article the debt will be transferred not to the state of Florida but to the Orange and Osceola County governments and it works out to some nauseating multiple of thousands per taxpayer. They're not happy about it.

So just a power grab then.

I look forward to DeSantis selecting a group of people who demand Splash Mountain be turned back into Song of the South, but with minstrels and the Peter Pan ride must add The Red Man segment from the movie.

Right, it would have... if they dissolved the Special District. If I'm reading it right, they are keeping the District intact, but they are taking it over with their own political appointees.

That means those appointees control the debt within the district and will pay the bonds just like Disney did with the same revenue from Disney. Which, I think they can force them to pay...

It's a hostile takeover. Of Disney. If they can't lawyer their way out of that... That makes me even more terrified of DeathSentence.

A simple solution, Disney should make politicians pay full price to enter the park. I assume they currently get a special deal After seeing how much it would cost to bring their young'uns to the park, they would quickly backtrack.

It seems pretty clear at this point that the Republican party is simply telling everyone, "Just trust us.  We are right.  We know what we're doing.  The Liberals are evil.  That's all you need to know."

And their followers simple say, "K.  Sounds good to me!"

I really think all this crass vice-signaling culture wars about drag queens, libraries, CRT, wokeism, Disney, trans-athletes etc. DeSantis does is just a distraction tool to garner attention to his awfulness and his utter incompetence of being an effective governor. He actually believes this is a winning methodology to the presidency.  It gets him name recognition and a platform with the bigoted base so he can do accordion hand gestures and sign proclamations with a Sharpie like papa Dump. What does he really stand for? ...we might just find out

You're mistaking bribery for competence.  Disney looks powerful because nobody ever cares about taking them on, if someone just wanted to say "no" to their bribes and just like... farking lean on them terribly, there's basically nothing they can do.

A lot of this system relies on bought politicians staying bought, and DeSantis is happy to take their money and then bite the hand that feeds him because he knows they're not going to risk losing money by fighting him.

2023-02-07 9:38:00 AM
So.  Florida is giving this guy infinite powers, and he seems to lack the common sense to properly cross the street.  I'll never understand politics.

My sense (not being from Florida) is that Disney has had it made for so long because they worked hand-in-glove with the FL government/legislature - as long as they made billions for FL, they got to basically dictate their own terms (the Reedy Creek District), freeing their lawyers up to totally dismantle IP law.

Now that they have to focus on fighting the FL government...

// good thing they've basically finished destroying IP laws
// I'd guess their next fight is (would have been?) monopolistic ownership of art production houses?

Possible changes by DeSantis employees.

1.  Only white people are allowed to work in Tomorrowland.
2.  Open carry allowed in Frontierland
3.  Angry natives returned to Jungle Cruise.  Also, the hippo will be shot again (they used to do that).
4.  Hall of Presidents modified to give Trump more Ben Garrison inspired body proportions like huge biceps and a flat stomach.

The reason that it worked for Florida was that Disneyworld and all the other parks, hotels and restaurants associated with the complex take up so much space, it might as well be its own county or district. Florida always knew that Disney would take care of the place out of pure financial self interest better than could the state itself - what do state officials know about what is best for the Disney project? And its worked well, until now. There is no compelling logistical or financial reason for the state of Florida to undertake this major restructuring other than the strictly political power play.

Here's a horrendous thought: DeSantis gets the Florida Bar Association to disbar en masse any and all Disney lawyers from practicing in the state.

Wyhat! I say, wyhat! We can just use our state level authority to wrestle the power back to the people, from the elites?

This is huge! Why, how can they be "elite" when a mere moon-faced governor of Florida can push them around.
