Centrist, measured between what extremes, on what scale?

MSNBC and all the other corporate media organizations call McCarthy moderate now.

"I think it's DOA," Bacon told reporters in the Capitol. "Because the president's got to make some compromises with Republicans. For him to say my way or the highway - no way."

No, he really doesn't.  Pass a clean debt extension then sit down and shut up republicans.

Ultraconservative Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., said Republicans are crafting a specific spending-cut plan that can get 218 votes and could land in the next few weeks.

A lot of people fail to understand Republicans motivations during the hostage negotiations around the debt ceiling: they want to shoot the hostage.

Republicans want the federal government to fail. The only thing that prevents them from pursuing it actively is that while their voters support Republican policy positions, the fallout would likely turn them against the party.

So we're in a game where they want to shoot the hostage, and make it look like Democrats fault.

That is a chess move, not an ideological one.

Nonononono! Fark Centrists have assured me that the truth is always found in the Center. If Republican Centrists are actual fascists, the Golden Center has to be somewhere between Reagan Democrats and Hitler. Anything else would be divisive.

In Pa. we have had a Republican majority and a Democratic Governor. The Republicans came out and said that any tax increases were off the table. Wolf would never tell them that increasing taxes on the working class was off the table so that is all we got.

It is always the wages slaves that need to give in to the hostage takers.

Imagine if this was the quote and the stated position.  Would any Republican take this seriously and change the way they do things?

If not, why should the president or any Democrat seriously consider this as a reasonable position?

Because the GOP things their majority was the result of divine intervention and that to go against them is to go against their Orange God?

They really don't though.  A default would hurt their donors a lot, along with the personal fortunes of a lot of GQP members of Congress.

They're using Nixon's Madman Theory to try and convince the Dems and our shiatty political media that they would totally kill the hostage, because that is the only way they get the concessions they want.

Obama fell for it in 2011, but the Dems learned their lesson after that, and didn't take the GQP's threats seriously in 2013 or 2015.  The GQP eventually caved because they were never "willing to kill the hostage."

Our shiatty political media never learned this, though.  Or, more likely, they decided to forget what happened in 2013 and 2015 because months of breathless coverage of a possible default drives more clicks than just spending one or two afternoons calling out the GQP's bullshiat and moving on.

Republicans and Democrats have been moving steadily to the right for the last 40 years. So now, the Democrats have moved into the middle and the Republicans have moved all the way into an insane asylum.

Republicans want you to believe that Obama and Biden are "socialists." They're not even liberal. They're both boring, middle-of-the-road corporatists. We haven't had an actual progressive president since Jimmy Carter and that was 50 years ago.

This is where the 20 holdouts seems staged.  You had 200 Republicans on his side the whole time but nothing is working with them.  The only actionable crap you hear is from the far right dipsh*ts.  They're going to continue to hold McCarthy pretend hostage for debt resolution and you will end up with a worse country because of them.  Again.

This is the same GOP that tried to provoke a constitutional crisis and overthrow our government to keep Trump in office, even if it meant inciting an armed mob to possibly kill them.  I no longer doubt that the vast majority of them are willing to kill the hostage, but the jury is still out on whether or not they are all willing to drink the Kool-Aid.

It's hilarious as well as glaringly obvious that some of those "independent" voters are seeing that the GQP under Qevin is doing NOTHING to help working Americans. I hope this is reflected in 2024 by another red drip.

Someone did an academic analysis of Obama's presidency on a strictly ideological basis, based on his actual actions in office, and it aligned neatly with Ronald Reagan.

Obama was no socialist.

the Nihilist growing inside me is thinking, the use of unfettered, unlimited cash in our political system, combined with willful deception by too many bad actors in the media, have made the us ungovernable.  its only a matter of time before we collapse.

Centrist Republicans: Biden should negotiate with us in good faith on key areas we can agree to cut so that we can pass this as a bipartisan bill.

Far Right Republicans: We demand to slash and burn the entire United States budget except for the military.

There is some nuance there, should you choose to see it.

No, Don Bacon (R - Tantrum) is not ruling out a small group of GOP acting reasonably and passing a clean Bill.  He's ruling out him being in that group and warning all the other GOP members to fall in line or they're in for a world of shiat.  6 of his colleagues is all it takes.

The debt ceiling is unconstitutional anyway.  The Federal government is required to pay its debts, so the only thing foot stomping by the Republicans does is speed up the dollar's demise as the global reserve currency.  Countries generally want that to be something stable, and the US is increasingly unstable as years go on.

Gonna, gotta, Gotti.
Vagueness, not specifics, are the GQP's  go-to. Their specific agenda is unpopular, full-stop.
That's why they did that ridiculous Sophie's Choice BS last month, trying to force Democrats to choose the budget hostages to shoot.

I don't see 218 of them agreeing to anything reasonable.
Maybe when the markets plummet they will wise up. I hope.
