(WBUR Boston)   Black women are more likely to get sick and die during pregnancy. How can not-so-modern medical science help? Start with improving their access to the machine that goes (squeeze)   (wbur.org) divider line

How would improving their access to accordions help pregnant black women? I think it just ensures daddy never sleeps at night.

This is gut-wrenching.   Even to this day, some professors/doctors/medical schools teach that black women are tough, can handle the pain, and the myth of black women being drug seekers persists.

What,s the issue.. BP monitors are readily available at any drugstore, and not expensive... anyone can buy one.

I suppose if you're already on food stamps, the $40 necessary to buy a wrist monitor at Walmart might as well be a thousand. Arm monitors are a little cheaper and more accurate if you know how to use it but not easy enough to use properly without help.

Another occasion of how expensive it is to be poor; the monitor and a daily Lisinopril-HCTZ  are really cheap compared to what it costs to fix HBP if it gets out of hand.

Or, rather, a different med, because they won't let you have lisinopril-hctz if you're pregnant

California did (and does) a good job with maternal mortality. Just like this program they instituted procedures. They started measuring blood loss instead of just saying, well, that's a lot of blood or meh, perfectly normal amount of blood. Surprisingly, far fewer women bled to death during or after birth. IANAD and this was an article I read years ago so don't ask me for specifics.

Black women are more likely to get sick and die during every stage of their lives, submitter. So are Black men.
From birth to death, preganant or not pregnant, This is even less "not news" than FARK.

Gee, I don't know, why not read the article and other sources to figure out what the issue is, instead of making disingenuous comments on Fark to absolve yourself of having to pay attention or contribute to positive change?

Check mine daily with the arm monitor.. maybe 5 minutes, including writing down the data..   not rocket science..  avg 84/128.

When you call your doctor about discrepancies, does it take your doctor twice as long to intervene with treatment as it would a white patient?
