Glad it went the way it did. In addition to being way easier on the eyes, Michelle Yeoh is a better actor.

Good. I love older Jackie Chan movies (Drunken Master is still one of my favorites), but his acting range can be measured in microns.

It was a good call if for no other reason than Michelle Yeoh is a much better actor than Jackie Chan.

It would've been too heavy on the slapstick. Which it had plenty of, but Yeoh was able to show gravitas, as well.
There's no way Jackie makes hot dog fingers profound as well as absurd.

Same. He made some ridiculously fun movies, but he's in the same league as "Fresh Prince" era Will Smith.

And then there is the whole, you know, supporting the Chinese regime thing.

I am glad he was not in it, for either the Ms. Yeoh's main part or Mr. Quan's secondary part. Mr. Chan could never have come close to Ms. Yeoh's performance across all her characters. And while Mr. Quan was mainly doing a martial arts short round /data mashup with sadness, we would have never gotten his scene in the tuxedo. The tuxedo scene was awesome as it was so in contrast to all of Mr. Quan's other characters in the movie.

Yeoh and Quan playing off each other so well just made that movie.

Let's face it.  Everyone loves Waymond.

Also, Stephanie Hsu makes a great Joy and Jobu Tupaki.  I'm a big fan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and she's been great in that too.

That's because we take James Hong for granted. He has been the go to "hey we need an older Chinese dude for our show" hire for like, 30+ years.

True, but he was still great.

/he's the non action version of Al Leong

I watched it coming down from mushrooms with some friends. Every five minutes we were like, "WTF is going on here?" and I feel like we would have had the same reaction without the shrooms. Very enjoyable though. At several points we were thinking "How the hell are they going to wrap this up?"

The directors have said that they did approach him, but that it ended up being mutual that he not go forward with the role. They've said that Chan was busy and suggested that Yeoh be the lead, and when they thought about that, they realized that it would open up the movie in more interesting ways. It sounded like they were going with Chan just to get the movie made, but meeting with him made them realize that they weren't going down the best creative direction.

I'm sure the movie would've been great if Chan were at the lead, City Hunter proved Chan can easily manage bizarre action sequences, but the story itself feels more poignant and important being about a mother/daughter dynamic.

Add this to the list of movies that were improved by switching to a female lead.

If Ke Huy Quan was up for Best Actor, I would 100% have expected Hong to get nominated for Supporting Actor. He's great in it and he really needs to be given an Honorary Oscar for his contribution to the arts.

It's still funny to me that they had him do a body swap with Piper on Charmed. In an episode that also had Daniel Dae Kim!

I love how Ke Huy Quan plays 3 roles in the film: meek but caring husband, badass interdimensional warrior, and Tony Leung

I don't know if will win the big awards at the Oscars, but if the measure is being amazed at the story, acting and impact of the movie, EEAAO should take home all the awards. Banshees is a great movie too, but it's a very different and shock factor aside, very traditional story. I like it when the awards go to those who take risks.

It's not often that all the major roles in a movie are Oscar-worthy. Yeoh, Quan, Hong, Stephanie Hsu...and even Jamie Lee Curtis turned in performances that I'd put as Oscar caliber.

It still probably would have been a good movie, but for different reasons.  Jackie can't act his way out of a paper bag, but definitely would have been very funny.

On balance, I think it wound up the way it was supposed to be.

You sir have excellent taste in Jackie Chan movies. Fearless Hyena is my fav too. The fight on the ceramic pots is amazing every time.
