honestly - if you take away New Hampshire's status as the "first primary", do they even have a reason to exist?

The lack of sales tax and the epic liquor stores are related.
My brother lives in MA, and I went with him once on a liquor run to NH. I have never before or since seen a liquor store the size of a Walmart. A liquor store with shopping carts FFS.

And so conveniently located right across the border along I-95. I can't imagine what their daily revenue must be.

Do it, losers. You have every right to run your own state events. You'll be doing it without the major parties, but you're free to host a shindig nobody goes to.

They said the same thing about Florida and Michigan in 2008, only to backtrack it later for reasons relating to a certain candidate's embarrassment.

There's at least one liquor store in Utah with shopping carts that's probably about a third of the size of a Walmart.

There's literally no point to this post except to highlight that shopping carts aren't a great metric.

While we're at it, ignore Iowa too. While the Democrats should be investing heavily in down ballot races in most places they don't have a practical lock it's largely useless to spend so much time on places that don't adequately reflect their voting base or provide a potential boon to electoral votes.

This isn't settling scores.   This is about shaking up a stale rotation.  Letting Iowa and New Hampshire go first every time with their tiny populations was creating silly narratives about who was a front runner or had momentum when their delegate counts are tiny.

Iowa population: 3M.

South Carolina Population: 5M.

Washington State population: 7.7M.

California population: 39.5M.

Hrm...let's not talk about Iowa's tiny populations as a defense for putting South Carolina first when South Carolina has a tiny population itself.

This is both about settling scores - Jaime Harrison, who was formerly a Podesta Lobbyist and is now the DNC chair, came from the SC Democratic Party - and about ensuring conservative Democrats stay at the forefront of the conversation (SC delivered Biden on a silver platter).

They can hold it, but no delegates from the state will be valid.

Supposedly.  This is the second time they're making that particular threat and last time they caved.

We could force it into one of those recursive things like when Amazon bots advertise a book they don't have for 50 cents more than the lowest price it can find, then when someone orders it, the bot orders it from the other person and tells them to ship it directly to the buyer - which works fine until no one has the book so it's just a bunch of bots trying to order from each other and the price skyrockets.

Eventually the 2024 NH primary will take place during the Battle of Hastings.

It just seems weird that any state would make a law affecting national elections in this way.

Expect Iowa to do this too. Both states have first in nation laws. One state is first in nation law for primary, one is first in nation for caucus. These laws are stupid.

So if New Hampshire voters don't vote in the first primary, I guess they're all breaking the law? Okay. So what then?

Do a bunch of N.H. cops (who for some reason in my mind are dressed up like Canadian Mounties) run around beating the crap out of everyone aged 18 and older with billie clubs?
