No worries, it's all dips from here on out.

Not directly to do with Bitcoin, but I've recently learned a bit about Bernie Madoff.

He was a well respected businessman. Recognized as a leader in his industry. He had forty plus years of great returns. Never missed a payment to anyone who wanted their earnings beck. He had even been investigated by the SEC and received their seal of approval.

Some of the best and brightest invested with him. Not just regular folk, but actual investors managing other people's money.

Meaning one of two things...

1 - the best and brightest financial minds are pretty stupid.

2 - the best and brightest are willing to participate in a scam they might not fully understand, but don't care either because they know they will benefit more than they lose, or because they think they can exit the scam before everything blows up.

As worthless as the SEC and other regulatory bodies might be, realize all sorts of illegal things are either legal to do with BTC or being done regardless because of the nature of BTC making it difficult to stop.

My point? You should totally buy BTC

This is a full-on scam backed by all the media and sycophantic hocus pocus they can muster. The big challenge now is winning back all those gamblers who got burned. We know it can be done. Because... hey... gamblers.

I am getting immense amounts of entertainment reading the blurbs from "fundamental" analysts struggling to pretend that there is anything fundamental to analyze about bitcoin. And then you get the chart people coming in with their theories and predictions. Charts based on... nothing... with a history of a couple of years.

You know where bitcoin is going to go? Wherever some group of big holders want it to go. Regulators appear to be toothless and powerless against the multi-billionaires, so the fix is in. It is a cult and a scam, and it makes sense to shake out the non-believers now and then so that you have only committed true believers left in your camp. Then you reward them with the next tier of new sycophants to be bullied and used. You can get out while you are ahead, but really... who does that? Better to keep riding the train than to have to join again later as a newbie.

Look within your minds eye and ask yourself, "What is a dip, really? Is it merely the lowest trough of a market price? Or is it actually the people buying and selling crypto?"

/hint: it's the latter

There are researchers that show in the blockchain highly suspicious transactions where it's just a bunch of whales passing around coins and money in a circle to drive activity.

Being able to put shiat like that together is an important survival skill in prison. There's lots of incentive to continue trying to work angles, and very little to discourage it.

So, let me get this straight.  Bitcoin makes a 40% gain over a month, and then doesn't make a new high for a week.  So bitcoin is dead again according to fark.

I type this from a ski lodge where I'm spending a small portion of my January's gains.  You guys can have your smug self-satisfaction, I'll take the fresh tracks.

Not declaring you have a controlling interest in a company that you use to make crazy investments that are advertised as safe as FDIC insured banks. If Morgan Stanley had an under the table affiliate that operated the same way as FTX's Alemeda Research, they would be delisted from major exchanges by the SEC

It's a commodity with no use value, a security with no cash flow, and a currency with no issuer obliged to accept.  That people are willing to exchange real money for it means only that it has successfully captured their imaginations as a speculative instrument.  A lottery ticket, if you will.

So congratulations again on your particular scratcher paying off.

What is its value based on its fundamental use case, then? And since most of that is criminal activity, how do you feel about profiting off of ransomware?

It's no worse than playing the stock market. Have you looked at TSLA lately? Up 80% YTD. Good money for anyone who placed their bets at the right moment.

It is way worst. At least with Tesla there is actual product and company tied to the stock even though it is also greatly overvalued it still has value.

Up 80% YTD is because Tesla crashed in December, so, in the past month, of course it rose a bit. It's not like Tesla just delivered some radical new product which shakes up the market or got a major military contract, but is instead a company whose market capital is vastly higher than its assets and all potential sales for more than a decade whose lunch is currently being eaten by all major American and Japanese car manufacturers. Sure, if you bought at the trough and sold at the peak (which would be now or close to), you could make good money, but if you bought at the beginning of April and sold now, you would have lost almost half your money (approx. $380 to approx. $195). In fact, if you bought any time before November, you would have lost money. Tell me again how that's a good investment?

As to crypto, it's fine as a commodity without any intrinsic value, but, much like Spanish postal coupons after WWI, it isn't a long-term investment, nor does it have a base price (it could spike to $100,000 or crash to nothing for literally no reason other than being a fad), nor is it an actual currency in any way, shape, or form. High volatility is a very, VERY Bad Thing for a currency, and that volatility is also the only thing crypto is selling to people who aren't trying hide their money from law enforcement or debt collectors.

/Nevermind the epic environmental cost.
