Before that happens, though, you'll have the chance to see "Creature Commandos," which Gunn claims he's already written.

Meanwhile, this Friday on Didney, you can see "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur," loosely based on Jack Kirby's characters.

Truly the Golden Age of Television.

Eh. Who knows? Maybe DC will capture that decades old lightning strike in a bottle after all this time. DC needed to set themselves up as Star Trek to Marvel's Star Wars but instead they gave the keys to a guy who jerks off to Frank Miller calling Black Canary a whore.

They already made a definitive Supergirl movie.

I think it's the first role I'd seen Helen Mirren play where she didn't take her clothes off.

I don't think Supergirl will be a "joiner".
She should be stronger than superman so could be interesting.

I'll watch it if they manage to find a woman even half as gorgeous as Melissa Benoist.

I just finished reading it on a recommendation.  It's different, that's for certain.  Although I will say, the idea that Kara has no friends who could/would join her on an interstellar journey to get drunk on her 21st birthday is strange within the overall DC universe.

And since we're talking about drunk Kryptonians....

A guy walks into a bar at the top floor of large skyscraper and asks for a strong one. He drinks up and asks for another one. After quite a lot of drinks he walks over to a table where there are two men sitting, talking and drinking. "I'll bet you guys 5000 bucks I can jump out that window and land safely on street below!"

The two men look at each other then agree to accept the bet. So the drunk walks to the window and jumps out. The two men can hardly believe their own eyes when they see him land safely on the street and again enter the building. "How'd you do it?!" they ask in amazement when he enters the bar again.

"Well, you see." the drunk replies. "There is this ventilation shaft straight below this window, and the stream of air is so strong, it slows you down enough to land safely on the grid. Why don't you try it yourselves?"

So, both the men hurry to the window and jump out, facing certain death as they hit the street at high speed.
At this point, the bartender walks up to the drunk and says: "You're one mean drunk, Superman."

Just not suck and don't be either stupidly grimdarkgrittyedgy or overly comedic to the point of stupidity and it'll make bank.

I don't do DC and don't know jack about source material but I thought Birds of Prey was pretty good, minus Great Value Diet Jared Leto Joker.

Maybe Gunn will give DC movies the one thing they need: consistency.  Hope it's not consistent suck.

Finally! We get the Thanos/Samwise/DCEU crossover!

...in this story, she is a character who is raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everyone around her perish in some terrible way, so she's a much more jaded character.

"Remember, you can't spell SUPERGIRL without EMO!"

"Huh? Of course you can. Her name doesn't even have an M or an O anywhere in..."

"I SAID, you CAN'T spell SUPERGIRL without EMO!"

"Go on, Supergirl's always been upbeat and fun. They're going with this version just because James Gunn can't comprehend a character who doesn't mope, cuss and drink, aren't they?"

I really hope James Gunn's run with DC is wildly successful, just to piss off people who post things like this.

Tyrone Slothrop: I really hope James Gunn's run with DC is wildly successful, just to piss off people who post things like this.

That's a stupid reason to want anything to succeed. Personally I'm hoping Gunn does turn things around and makes DC fun again, but I also hope he proves capable of bringing a little more range to the characters than snark covering for deep emotional scars. One note writing gets old fast no matter what the note is, and picking this particular version of Supergirl doesn't sound like it's really stretching what he's known for.

I'm against the general trend of 'grimdark', but in the case of Supergirl it would be nice to see her on the screen doing something other than 'what if Superman was a petite girl in a skirt'.

If I skimmed the article properly, they're looking to try a 'slightly jaded, mostly (but temporarily) depowered Kryptonian on a quest'.  OK.  Let it rip.

I just want Gunn to do 3 things.
1) A good classic JSA story
2) Blue and Gold (it could happen in the Booster Gold series)
3) A faithful adaptation of the Judas Contract (it will never happen)

Blue and Gold plays very much to Gunn's strengths, and it can't be a coincidence that Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are two of the characters he wanted to bring to the screen almost immediately. There's no way they aren't bringing those two together as soon as possible.

I do not have faith that they make it even halfway through their 10 show/film arc before something goes horribly wrong

The only way that works is by hanging a lantern on it.  There has to be some kind of ironic or comedic reason for it that gets mocked more than once.

The things I want DC to avoid at all cost are these:

1) grimdarking X character. They've been doing it for over a decade, it's been unilaterally terribly received.

2) teen / 20 something / family drama stories. They did this on the CW, it arguably worked with Smallville (though not for me) before it ruined Flash, it ruined Supergirl, Superman and Lois, Stargirl... It also didn't work when Marvel tried it with shows like Cloak and Dagger, Runaways, The Gifted... Just STOP with these stories. We don't need stories about the family or work-life balance of superheroes.

3) Marvel had their Avengers, but you need to EARN the Justice League. Take characters like Shahzam and make good other leaguer movie over years, and then bring them together. Otherwise, actually skip all the pretense and origin stories and just have a truly world or universe level threat and bring together all the heroes without origin stories. I'm pretty sure we could all accept this, but you can't do both.

Or it's just the fashion she likes to wear and deal with it. Actresses rarely lampshade the barely-there outfits they wear to award shows.

I've enjoyed every movie I've seen he's had a hand in since Troma.  He even made Suicide Squad great again, and the last movie sucked so hard I thought it had killed off that IP.

I don't think they will.  Upcoming they have The Authority which has a gay couple and two bi members. Plus there is the Paradise Lost series which will be an entire island of nothing but women. Batwoman will probably show up at some point. They have plenty of gay characters without needing to convert established characters.  Now it's entirely possible that Supergirl will be gay in the Flash movie since that takes place in an alternate timeline and was finished before Gunn took over.

Anyone who thinks they're finally going to follow a comic storyline in much more than the broadest of strokes is optimistic as best. It will just be another excuse to make sexy evil Supergirl yet again, with even odds on whether she's mind controlled by an uncomfortably older supervillain.

How about including a few details that show how Supergirl is a cryptid, that she has to remember to be human?

- remembering to buy and use hot mitts for picking up a cast iron pot straight from the oven
- having to remember if she blinked or breathed in the past half hour
- carefully ducking under an overhang so she doesn't slam through it (woman of steel, world of cardboard)
- no loud clapping, yelling, or jumping up and down when her favorite team wins
- no random arm movement in case she breaks someone accidentally
- remembering to dodge cars so she doesn't damage the car in her civilian disguise
- making sure not to hover accidentally
- no deep sighs or sneezes that destroy everything in front of her (Superman 3)
- dressing for the blizzard that she barely notices
- having to react only to what humans can see/hear instead of what she can really sense
- preparing things so a convenient accident works

(This is similar to the scene from Smallville, where Clark wanted to fluff his pillow and he accidentally destroyed the pillow instead.  Or where Clark Kent is about to be hit by Joker wielding a giant mallet, and Kal-El has to figure out how to react like a human)

That's an unusual take.

"Check it out! There's this kid named Billy, and when he says a magic word, he turns into a super strong adult who can fly and throw lightning! And he fights demons and stuff!"

"Booooring. Where'd he get his powers from?"

"Wizard did it."

But doesn't this all feel very scattershot to anyone else? It feels like they're not focusing on any kind of core around which to build this universe. I mean... The Authority? Creature Commandos? There's gotta be 100 more meaningful characters/teams to get to in DC before getting to them.

You're right. We need a third, simultaneous-but-completely-unrelated Batman project.

How about another Wonder Woman? You know, the franchise/IP where the last film was so bad it killed the franchise?

Ah right, the Flash. ia think they've got a complete film in the can, but don't want to release it for some reason...

Green Lantern? Oh right, that's on his roadmap...

A new standalone Superman? If I recall correctly, that's what started this whole f'n mess.

I suppose they could reboot Aquaman, but people seemed to actually like the two they did.

Welp, that's all of the DC characters. That's all we have to work with, people.
