The stupid remains so strong out there, especially MarketWatch for publishing this stupid article. 🙄

Honestly I'm going to start leaving my unlit gas stove on just to protest and trigger the libs.  Same with the oven. Door wide open.  Might even stick my head in it for a few minutes because omg they'd be so mad.  Spread the word.

Well, it works.

The world is big and complicated. It's hard to parse the reasons for things happening -- and it hurts that the American media are so lousy in even basic information.

And then most people are so lazy, so cheerfully misinformed, and so dumbly incapable of figuring out who is trustworthy, the descent of America into gross, inept, eternal outrage is predictable. Americans have always been prone to stupidity; it's just been perfected.

This might be blasphemy to any chefs out there but coming from a non-cook, what's wrong with an electric wok?

They don't adjust temperature as quickly as moving a wok on a gas burner can, and they usually won't get as hot.    Gas is really is pretty nice for using a wok.

Not the same.

Yea my stir fry vegetables and chicken know that the heat from the stove is derived from electric or gas, and it behaves accordingly.

My vegetables also tell me that they prefer a pilot light over an electric ignitor as well.

These are true things that actually happen just like the gas stove ban.  Which is totally real and totally going to happen.

This makes sense because there weren't any Asian people before natural gas was harnessed as cooking fuel.

I like gas too, but let's be honest a house gas stove is not what we need, we want the 10 inch flame of a commercial stove.

And I ain't hearing anybody talking about allowing those in tiny apartments.  I want my freedom fire!

It sounds like the first person actually has THREE things that are non-negotiable.

1. Space to entertain
2. A gas stove
and
3. A Brooklyn Apartment.

Yeah, I'm with NYC on this one.  I don't trust people to manage an open flame in a shared building.  You wanna blow your ass up, you go buy a house in the suburbs like a good non-compromising weirdo.

This is the stupidest thing in the world.
"When something burns, you get byproducts - exhaust, fumes, ash, right?"
"But it burns clean!"
"Nothing's that clean. It's combustion, not nuclear annihilation."
There's an actual concern here, but it's being kneecapped by bad messaging.

Stile4aly: There's no reason you can't use an induction stove for a wok.

A proper curved-bottom wok won't work well on a flat induction burner.

Of course, you can get either a flat-bottomed wok (sacrilege!) or you could get a curved countertop induction range made for traditional woks...

I guess what I'm saying is I don't have a gas stove to begin with, so I had to stick my head in the microwave to give myself a tan...

2023-02-06 2:24:04 PM
I do prefer gas cook tops and I realize that the vast majority of electric models out there are of the lousy, cheap radiant coil style which is hard to control and heats poorly, and of course, most apartments have these rather than clean, easy to use induction stove tops because landlords hate us, but the lies on this one are just so classic, they do this every 2-3 years. Remember when it was low-flow toilets? Seat belts? Helmet laws?

"Hey, we're looking into this" isn't bad messaging. Pretending there's an imminent gas stove ban is.

Open flame is best for woks, but electric works okay if you don't have a way to use a flame.  Gas isn't the only way, it's just easier because they made it that way.  Classic manipulation.

I think it's funny that these 'rugged individuals' cry at the slightest inconvenience.

Sure.

But in the meantime, we can either continue building gas stoves into everything - with the increased risk of fire and environmental/health problems - or we can have a pause until the technology catches up.

Guess which option NY and CA have chosen.

When you live out in the middle of bumfarkistan, a gas/propane stove is great to have when yet another tree takes out the power. On the 10th floor of a 100story high rise with aluminum backed exterior cladding and a grandfathered in (or missing) fire suppression system, ban gas stoves, candles, and anything else that might catch fire.

/i have a grill for the power outages.
//my stove is electric
///turns out, woks don't work on those but it also turns out, I can't cook. So...

See also "The water's turning frogs gay!"

Like ... I'd LOVE to be able to talk about advancing our understanding of pharmaceutical contamination of drinking water and investment in updating our aging water treatment facilities.  Hell, we could try and deal with the Colorado river situation before it turns into a civil war while we're at it.

But a very reasonable academic conversation got hijacked by Alex farking Jones before it ever left the hallowed halls of academia.

Wok cooking requires direct, super-high flame, not the kind we can get on most home stoves at all, so it's not really a problem. You don't replicate that without a specific type of burner. Now, as far as I can tell, this is about residential homes, not businesses like Chinese restaurants. So it's not germane at all. Not that that matters to republicans.

After suffering what we refer to as The Great Gas Leak of Xmas 2020 in my house, I'm perfectly fine with moving to electric everything. My house has no shutoffs anywhere, making the slightest issue with an appliance into a potential for catastrophic failure. Having gas in an apartment building sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Look, electric works fine for cooking. You want an open flame, go buy a Weber.

As it pertains to California, the problem I have is that electricity is extraordinarily expensive here, and during the summer we have flex alerts where we're supposed limit use of electric appliances during peak periods.  Peak periods are 4p-9p.  How am I supposed to make dinner?

And on top of electricity being extraordinarily expensive, the new solar law that goes into effect this April basically kills any savings you will get out of installing solar as a handout to the power companies.  The amount of credit you get for contributing solar to the grid is nearly worthless if you're financing panels as the ROI is much longer now and interest will eat deep into it.
