Skinamarink (2022)- Two siblings find that their parents are missing and all the windows and doors have disappeared... but you'd never know because, due to the grainy film effects and weird camera angles, you can't see or hear a gottdamn thing. I want the time back that I wasted watching this crap.

QoTW:
HBO added Wayne's World to their rotation for February. What an absolute delight of a movie that holds up extremely well. Good vibes all around. The "Bohemian Rhapsody" scene is one of the first things to happen. It starts while the opening credits are still running. It's pretty crazy that one of the iconic bits of the 90s leads it off and yet the rest of the movie doesn't even come close to letting down. Tia Carrere's version of "Ballroom Blitz" totally rips. She's really great in this. Part of the reason this movie works so well is everyone in the cast feels perfect: Ed Harris, Lara Flynn Boyle, Brian Doyle-Murray, Alice Cooper, etc... Endlessly rewatchable.

From the title alone, I would have thought it was about Popeye going to see a movie at the local Cinemark.

Animalympics (1980): An animated feature about the first animal Olympics, brought to you by ZOO ("The network that brings out the beast in sports!") First saw this in the mid '80s and liked it. Watching it now, some of the portrayals, particularly of the Asian athletes, are a little problematic. It's not on a level with Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but still uncomfortable to watch with modern eyes, and there's at least one Amazon review calling it racist. It still has a lot going for it, though. Billy Crystal, Gilda Radner, and Harry Shearer are some of the voice talent, and Brad Bird was one of the animators. The characters exhibit all the positive traits we like to see in athletes: hard work, determination, good sportsmanship. The one character who truly is an unsportsmanlike sonofabiatch gets his comuppance. After the day's events, the competitors hang out and dance together at a disco. Friendships are formed, two competitors fall in love. A little uncomfortable now - "of its time", as people say - but still an enjoyable watch.

The Fortune Cookie (1966):  Jack Lemmon is a TV cameraman who gets knocked over while shooting a football game. He gets his bell rung, but he's fine. Enter his brother-in-law (Walter Matthau), a sleazy personal injury attorney who sees an opportunity for a big payday. He gets Lemmon to play along, pretending to be incapacitated. Lemmon feels guilty about it when the football player who hit him turns out to be a true friend dedicated to his care, but when his estranged wife indicates an interest in his welfare, he sticks with the act. The wife, however, turns out to be a greedy opportunist. It's a pretty dark comedy, but still ends on a hopeful note. And it's fun to watch Matthau and Lemmon together.

The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor(2008): A perfectly adequate entry in the franchise. Brendan Fraser can rock a Fedora as well as anyone. Streaming on Hulu.

I've also been watching Lockwood and Co. on Netflix and am enjoying that very much.

Wrapped up His Dark Materials on HBO and it's far too small for its premise.  There def should be more 'Let's Kill God Because He's a Rotten Bastard' in today's media but this book/movie/show ain't good enough to be the standard-bearer.

Altered 2006
A kind of campy humor/horror alien movie about rednecks who want revenge on aliens that killed their friend.  Not going to win awards, but I like the combo of funny/scary and the middle of the woods kind of creepiness.

Also watching Lockwood & Co. - we all (me, the boy and the girl) LOVE IT. Fully realized alternate present.  Great characters.  Well done suspense, horror, comedy, and drama.  We all think the actress who plays Lucy, Ruby Stokes, is amazing and should become a great star. Nira Park has a production credit.  Boy and I are completely unsurprised that this show is a descendant of Cornetto.

2023-02-06 10:01:16 AM
That 90s Show (2nd half of season 1) (Netflix): Improved DRASTICALLY from the first half of the season, especially the final two episodes directed by Laura Prepon.  I look forward to season 2, especially with its increased episode count.  10 episodes is too brief to grow with the characters.  Everything is too rushed.

Violent Night (Redbox):Interesting mishmash of Home Alone and Die Hard.  If Kevin McAllister were replaced with a black girl and John McClane were replaced with the real Santa Claus, you'd have Violent Night.  At times the gore is a bit excessive, but I thought the movie was well done.  The acting from David as Santa and the little girl are both top notch.  John Leguizamo as the bad guy, on the other hand, was terrible.

Did not get to loop back to my 'Best picture winner' crusade.  Intend on doing that this week.

You made it the whole way? I lasted about a half hour.

Mrs. and I watched Jeepers Creepers Reborn over the weekend. We went in not knowing it was rated as one of the worst horror films of all time. I wouldn't go that far but it's really REALLY bad. They green screened entire scenes, so there are times where the backgrounds look like a late 90s spooky forest screensaver. I wouldn't call it the worst of all time, but it's bad SyFy quality. And I would be super mad if I paid theater prices to see it. Free streaming, it was a fun so bad it's good watch.

I made it ten minutes. What a pile of shiat. I'd rather watch a farking Trump rally.

Skinamrink - I tried to like this. I loved Eraserhead, Videodrome, Primer Evil Dead and all sorts of horror goodness and maximum strangeness, but it was just a disjointed mess of experimentation. That said, as someone trying to make low budget independent films, It gave me hope because somebody actually paid real money for this and put it on shudder!

Black Panther Wakanda Forever - Mediocre middle Marvel. Do not ask me to take hummingbird wings on the ankles as your mutant flight power and still take you seriously. Sure you can kick my ass but I'll laugh while you do it unless I have a dehumidifier or a bunch of desiccant beads to weaken you. That said, loved the Mayan backstory, but also why make them blue? Couldn't we have gone with color changing skin or a nice sea foam green, or is green and red alien automatically?

The Last of Us -this show is just fantastic. This was a show that I've seen three episodes of that had me tearing up about characters that I just met in the episode. Of a video game adaptation? Best show of the week, easy.

2023-02-06 10:25:16 AM
Cunk on Earth (2023) - A mockumentary history program.  Alternately stupid as hell and very witty.  Kind of gave me Ali G vibes, but in a more cultured way.  A good watch.  Rating C+.

I also watched the two Lethal Weapon movies released after Belgian techno anthem "Pump up the Jam":

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) - Murtaugh has 8 days till retirement and Riggs does his best to make sure he doesn't make it.  Rene Russo adds a lot as the love interest for Riggs.  Rating C+

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) -  The last movie in the Lethal Weapon Cinematic Universe.  The script is kind of weak and the cast doesn't seem to be having much fun anymore.  Still a watchable 90's action flick. Rating C.

Maneater. On Hulu. Country singer Trace Atkins shoots at a shark about 37 times with a shotgun and never reloads.

Jeepers Creepers reborn:Let's have actors in your 4th installment, call the previous movies "just some films" instead of using them as a base, taking away the reason people are giving your movie a watch, then enter one of the most boring horror movies to ever exist while also taking away ANYTHING that made the creature in the first 3 movies fun or scary.
The writer should be chased out of town.

oh wow that's too bad, I understand though. curious what contributed to the pile?
The language was really hard to listen to but the it became part of the fabric of the script, to hear some of the words come out of Julie Louis was interesting. The movie had a very good look to it, the cameos were good, Barber Shop scene was a good one.

Hey potatoes pototoes. Have a great day !

Toast of London/Tinseltown- This is a comedy series starring Matt Berry from What We Do in the Shadows. His character is a lot like his character on WWDitS, but I enjoy that character and thought the show was very funny.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre - This is an anime horror anthology on Netflix. Usually I'm not into anime but this one is pretty good. Each story is fairly short and very creative.  A lot of the episodes don't resolve and feel like they randomly stop but I think that adds a bit of mystery to the stories.

Poker Face on Peacock, of all places.

It's headlined by the same lead actress from Russian Doll, and she plays a character who naturally knows when someone is lying.  She's working in a casino in Vegas and the ability comes in handy when bad things go down.

It's a fun show.

The Banshees of Inisherin (2022, Ireland)
Martin McDonagh directs; Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan, who were all nominated for Oscars, star. Set in 1923 and filmed on an island off the west coast of Ireland, the movie is beautiful. The story can be taken at face value, but I think it is better seen as a fable or an allegory about the Irish Civil War.

The Fabelmans (2022, USA)
Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical look at his family when he was growing up, focusing on his parents and on how he became a filmmaker. Michelle Williams did a wonderful job as his mother; Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Judd Hirsch, and Gabriel LaBelle also star. This was the most entertaining film I saw this week.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022, USA)
As pure spectacle, it was amazing. Definitely see it on a big screen. Three hours and 12 minutes of beautiful shots. The story and acting were just OK.

Women Talking (2022, USA)
Written and directed by Sarah Polley. This is based on a true story of sexual abuse and rape that happened in 2010 at a Mennonite colony in Bolivia. The women of the colony debate whether to stay or leave. A literary, theatrical film, slow-moving and well-acted.

Bicycle Thieves (1948, Italy)
Vittorio De Sica's neorealist masterpiece, set in post-war Rome, shows a man and his son desperately searching for the man's stolen bicycle, which he needs for his new job. Beautiful black-and-white cinematography. It still holds up as a story.

M3GAN (2022, USA)
A mix of horror and science fiction, this is New Zealand director Gerard Johnstone's second film. M3GAN is a robot, a doll that is supposed to be a toy. She takes her instructions to protect her owner a little too seriously, and all hell breaks loose. Campy, definitely holds the viewer's interest, only a few gory scenes.

The Whale (2022, USA)
Five days in the life of a morbidly obese man. Brendan Fraser does a great job, as does Hong Chau as his nurse and friend. Darren Aronofsky directed in his typical histrionic, over-the-top style. I'm still considering how I feel about the way the obese are presented here.

Because they're blue in the comics, and the water is probably cold too.  Rewatched it with the subtitles on, picked up a lot of little things.  Subtitles is becoming the norm for me.  The first two Ant-Man movies are on deck for this coming weekend.

Wakanda Forever: Nope. But let me just say that my displeasure with this film is entirely due to my only knowledge of Prince Namor being from Silver Age Marvel comics in the mid '60s and early '70s. He was nothing like he was portrayed in the film, except for those ridiculous wings on his ankles which made about as much sense as it did back then and both in the comics and the film, he was a whiny little biatch. The plot was nonsensical.
SPOILER SPACE

If Namor's army is so gorram powerful, why the fark does he need Wakanda's help to take over the surface world? And Wakanda comes across as a lot less badass than they did throughout the rest of the MCU. Also, when you think about it, creatures who exist underwater would face the same issue of moving around on land (much less resistance than being in water) as people walking on the moon. (I know...it's fantasy and I'm applying logic to it). Finally, the plot reminded me too much of Aquaman, which was 100x more entertaining for me. Lastly, the actor playing Namor sucked, IMO.

Shotgun Wedding: Fell asleep about 30 minutes or so in. May try to give it another try just to see more Jennifer Coolidge who is a hoot.

Willow: Finally finished this. There's a kernel of a decent story there but man oh man does the anachronistic language just kill the whole thing. The three young women are all good looking but no one in the cast can act, including Warwick Davis. And OMG, the amount of teen angst is unbearable, there is way too much comic relief, and after making it obvious that Kit and Jade were in love, they made us wait for their first kiss until the second to last episode. Of course, huge props to Disney for even creating a lesbian romance in the first place. So, I guess if all we got was one kiss, that'll have to do. I'll give season 2 a chance if it gets done.

It isn't high drama and there are some plot canyons to navigate but on the whole it has been very enjoyable watching so far.  Hearing S. Epatha Merkerson declare "That motherfarker has to die!" was particularly enjoyable. A willing suspension of disbelief is well rewarded if you choose to watch.

Dark City. A damn good movie and very hard to describe. Bizarre and creepy. Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, and the dude who played Riff Raff.

I also picked this anthology up after seeing some animators I follow gushing about it. It got a Blu-ray release with an English dub. Only watched the first one but it was really good.

I loved Dark City. It's the Matrix in Space via David Lynch and it was out before the Matrix. I saw it with my friends in a movie theater and absolutely nobody else. I loved it, but I was in the minority.

The same group will go absolutely mad over the Matrix in just a few short months, but they didn't show Dark City any love. Keanu Reeves I'd an objectively better messiah and I'm ok with that.

The Menu.  I loved this film. It had the right amount of creepiness, bizarreness, and absurdity. I watched it with an old friend from my waiting tables days in which he actually went up the restaraunt management chain a bit. So knowing how restaraunts work and being a bit of a foody myself, this movie was fun. I am not staying it was funny, but that it was fun. Anna Taylor Joy was great and just gets sexier as the movie goes on. Hoult played an awesome obsessed foody. Fiennes did a marvelous job with even some touching moments near the end. The other players were perfect in their parts and portrayals. Sometimes heavy handed, others scenes sharp and concise. It may not hit the high art mark, but it was a fun
movie.

Atlanteans are blue in Marvel comics, that's all.

Lay off the wings, tho.  They're cool.  They're a Mercury/Hermes homage from the original creator back pre-WW2, but that gets lost in the movie's revamp of Atlanteans as Mayan descendants.

I was a big fan of the film as a kid (and Joanne Whalley in particular) but I couldn't get through the show. I didn't notice the language, just that it was so boring. I'm canceling Disney+ tomorrow, maybe I'll try it again before I do.

They were done was well as you could do them, but they just amuse me so damn much. Something about the concept just makes me laugh. Some ancient ancestors idea of a cool aerodynamic flourish on a god still going hummingbird strong in 2023. Knowing a team of people worked late nights to get the fluttering right... lol and then just writing the word fluttering makes me lol.

I watched most of The Homesman with Hilary Swank and Tommy Lee Jones. Its the 1850s and Tommy Lee Jones is helping Hilary Swank bring three crazy women back east after they went insane in the western territories. Would watch again because I missed the first part of the movie.

I watched "Mystic River" for the first time the other day, and while I thought the movie was just alright, I seem to remember praise being heaped upon that movie left and right when it came out in *checks IMDb* 2003? Has it really been that long already?

Then I watched "The Lives of Others" (also first time viewing) and I enjoyed that movie much, much more.

EX Machina (USA, 2014) Human plays god, makes android in his own image. That turns out to be a bad thing when it REALLY starts learning how to act human. Scarier than M3GAN. At least one can tell that the little robot is fake... Ava is way too close. Excellent effects, not over done. End is reminiscent of "Frankenstein" with Boris Karloff, only quieter.

New HGTV show, Rico to the Rescue. LOL, yeah it's basically like Holmes Family Rescue, only with 100% fewer Holmes (not that I mind the Holmes family, but there's so goddam many of them or so it seems).

Rico is a general contractor with a heart of gold who wants to help people who've been screwed by previous GCs, and Poonam is the designer.

As always, when the places are done, they look like a magazine spread.

I prefer Help! I Wrecked My House, but until new ones of those come out, this is a pretty good replacement.

Pattons advance across France is outrunning Allied supply lines so a bunch of rear echelon soldiers become truck drivers so he doesn't have to slow down.   Kinda cool seeing the supply-side of the war and while it shouldn't be that remarkable, its a racially integrated outfit which seems sorta bold to tackle in 1952.
Like most of this stuff, it's based on a real thing.
