Stop trying to intellectualize Ron DeSantis and his enablers.  They are white supremacists who believe in the Lost Cause fallacy of the civil war and the inferiority of POC over what they imagine is white western Christian "culture".  All while ignoring the horrors committed in defense of said culture (the Holocaust is just one of many examples).
The autobiography of Frederick Douglass should be mandatory for every middle school student as an eye witness account to the horrors of chattel slavery and discrimination.  Pair that with the speeches and philosophy of MLK, and Abraham Lincoln.  The majority of founders were slave owners entirely opposed to universal suffrage and human rights.
We also need an AP course on the labor movement in high schools, which is both necessary and considered extremely dangerous to those in power.
After all, their wealth is built on massive government subsidies and they pay almost nothing in taxes.  They don't want that to change.

The Republican claimed that African-American studies has no "educational value" and basically is some type of trojan horse and "mind virus" to indoctrinate young (white) people in woke ideology.

Holy shiat, he said that? Wow. Just wow. I can't even. That's not even saying the quiet part aloud, that's, well, saying the quiet part at a gubernatorial press conference in one of the most populous states.

It's amazing that people aren't picking up on how Orwellian this argument is.

Especially since Desantis' lawyers already defined "woke" as "being aware of social and racial injustice".

There is something kind of "Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz" that Ron has going for him. You just get this sense that there's a kind of metaphysical evil that dwells inside the chubby facade, and that evil is overpoweringly attractive to the primitive peoples that make up his cult

Republicans just want to look back at the glory days, when the Radical Republicans passed Reconstruction laws that made everything better.

They tend to skip over the bad stuff that happened after Reconstruction ended (Frances Rice of the National Black Republican Association even insists that Hayes didn't actually end Reconstruction)...

In the 1880s and early 1890s, control of the House chamber seesawed between Democrats unsympathetic to the concerns of African Americans and Republicans increasingly ambivalent to those same concerns. Though one reformer implored Republican colleagues to "never surrender the great principles of human liberty of which [the party] was the born champion," Republican leaders sensed little electoral opportunity in pushing for black voting rights in the South.13 One historian explains that the Republicans "harbored some hope that if race was no longer salient in southern politics, other issues might rise to the surface and become the catalyst for a realignment of the parties. . . . f the Republican Party in the South was no longer identified with and supported by black voters, it might have the opportunity to redefine itself and become accepted as a legitimate political entity" by white Southerners.14 Black Representatives admonished their party for abandoning the freedmen. "A veritable set of fools a few of our party leaders have been," Thomas Miller said on the House Floor in February 1891. "They will listen to all the cheap sentimentality sounded under the name of negro domination and business prostration, be swerved from a plighted duty to a faithful constituency the country over."15

It's a step up, but in the sense The Official Lynch Squad legitimizes and consolidates the power of the literal mob by making it a policy function of the state. So the bad kind of step up.

It's way more than racisim and Jim Crow. DeSantis is playing a very long game.  He's attempting to change the government in subtle but powerful ways.   Fostering concentrating on the brutality and sadism is a trap.  This goes deeper and is more fundamentally a campaign to alter democracy.

Imagine removing half the expenses of running a government and justifying it with a story that goes something like this:  "Gee we wish women, blacks, Jews, Italians had a better life, but the state can't afford that right now."

Imagine removing way more than half of the voters and justifying it with another story.  "It just doesn't come up in the legislature, or if it does, the bill gets killed in committee.  You have to have a critical mass of constitutents who vote to make these changes."

The final subtle change of government is to remove the thousands of dedicated individuals who see public service as a vocation, a way to make the world better and exercise values of decency as a patriotic or religious virtue.   Eliminating or grinding down education is a great way to make government less functioning service and more a vengeful and punitive overlord.

It's not even about their white supremacy.  Stoking white grievance has always been a means to an end with the Republican Party.  DeSantis has his eye on the real prize:  destroying public education in the state and driving everyone to put their kids in private/charter schools where they can be indoctrinated with Republican values and their DeVos-esque buddies can make bank.

Being a Black Republican in Florida is...it's not a good deal for you. And everything this clown is floating out there is designed to undermine any progress in the last hundred years, or more. At this point, aiming to be up in the Big House, as opposed to the fields is maybe NOT the best strategy for you, or your friends, family, and neighbors.

From a link in the article:

...Silk paid homage to the former U.S. president remembering the close relationship the three shared going as far as to say that he 'treated us just like the other children - Eric, Don Jr, Tiffany.'

But as Trump paid tribute to Diamond, describing her as one of the world's 'brightest stars' he admits he 'didn't know Silk at all' despite meeting her countless times.

Yep. We saw the damage that an incompetent con artist could wreak in just a few years, and was only stopped by a global event that convinced people to get rid of him early. People are rightly terrified that a competent fascist could finish the job.

Yeah this. All of this. Just wanted to mention that I never heard a word about the labor movement or labor struggles till college. It was never even mentioned in passing at my public high school. I never knew it was even a thing. Always found it interesting that the powers that be wanted to send us into the world having no knowledge of labor history.

The only reason to look forward to that would be is if they both destroyed each other and were never heard from again. The inevitability, however, is that one of them is going to lead the Republican party. It's going to happen, fantasies aside, like it or lump it. Maybe not such a joyous occasion?

It's an interesting use of the term "supremacy" to refer to a very obvious and very deep inferiority complex.

Not exactly. His winning would doubtlessly be catastrophic in a way that even trump wasn't, because he's not as self contradictory and incompetent. However, I don't think he can truly put the support together on a national level.

However.

Trump won, and a major part of it was everyone assuming he wouldn't and letting our guard down.

Not happening again. Thus, this man is an existential danger to me, people I love, and my country.

The Florida governor may be even more sickeningly dangerous than we thought.
