I don't understand why they didn't take long term action in December when the Democrats had the house and half of the senate.  Punt it down the road far enough that hopefully the gqp wouldn't be as much of an issue.

It will take a stock market crash and all of their donors calling up to threaten to cut them off before they even think about negotiating. And then, still... I'm not even sure that will do it.

These people are a f*cking cult. They are more dangerous than any terrorist could possibly be.

Yeah, Weaker of the House Qevin already gave away the farm. He made yuge bigly concessions to the treason caucus and now they have him by the balls. Fresh from winning via tantrum the maga morans see no reason to negotiate with him.

All this GQP in disarray would be hilarious if they weren't gambling with the financial future of our country.

but they are
and we may be boned

Funny that not a single republican had a problem with raising the debt limit all those times it happened under Trump - or any other republican for that matter.

/it's not funny, it's expected.
//only stupid people that are bad with money think this is how you manage a nations finances.

Never negotiate with terrorists.  No deal, you pass the bill or you own the results.

The arguments around this thug are ignoring one major reality: if the GOP gets concessions on this, they'll do it every time; it will be an inevitable decline into an economic death spiral.

The alternative: no negotiation, and accepting the risk of going over the cliff, sucks and will hurt the country deeply for years.

But in the latter scenario, the country eventually recovers. In the former, we just die slowly.

...Driving it off a Cliff to make effigies of Republicans for basically pushing the car for us is foolish, and only hurts the people Republicans and their wealthy handlers want to hurt. The Middle Class.

It will be your stuff, and my stuff being driven off the cliff, nothing of theirs.

Responsible adults pay for the things they've bought.

There is a cynical part of me that says that the Democrats decided they wanted to hand the Republicans this particular rope.

They didn't have the votes in the Senate for that.

Also, long term...this is probably the best chance they have to defuse it permanently.

My assumption: the Democrats believed that a small handful of people in the GQP would blanche when faced with the possibility of blowing up the national economy along with a good portion of the international economy, and they would support a clean increase ahead of budgetary negotiations intended to implement spending changes they'd like implemented to bring down the budget deficit.

I'm guessing we're going to default. How do we as citizens prepare for that? Can we?

2023-02-06 10:44:46 AM
Dems should just keep introducing ways to vote for a clean debt ceiling hike. If Republicans want to sabotage the national economy, they can do it on their own.

Yeah, it feels like excessive cleverness on the Dems part.

You'd think they would have learned from the past 6 years that cleverness can only get you so far, but...

They could not pass the bill.  It would have run up against a filibuster by the Republicans.

No. There's no way to prepare for a world superpower possessing the world's de facto reserve currency unilaterally deciding not to pay all of its financial obligations. No other country in that position has ever done such a thing because it would be monumentally stupid to do so.

That is exactly what they wanted. Why bail out the Qs who are willing to crash everything? Make their own party deal with them. The Qs/Freedom Caucus keep pulling their shiat because other people keep bailing them out.

Time to rip the bandaid off before the wound becomes gangrenous, or some other mixed metaphor about better to do it now when there's a chance for recovery after. I'm not saying it won't suck, but the long term effects of giving into them or providing cover will be worse.

This will be a true show if Dems have learned anything or not.

They need to hold strong and make the Reich blink. If the Dems blink on this, I will lose what little respect they've gotten from me with Dark Brandon and some of the things they've managed to do like the Inflation Reduction Act, Infrastructure, CHIPs, etc.

Hopefully, they will show that they've grown a spine. If the Reich doesn't blink THEY are the ones that carry any repercussions moving forward and the Dems would need to HAMMER the FARK out of them on it EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

Biden should just tell them, "We're not doing this again, I'm going to veto any debt limit legislation that comes to my desk without an automatic increase, I don't negotiate with terrorists and it's time for everyone else to stop too.  If that choice makes things hard well then it makes them hard, but its a small price to pay to stabilize governing in America and I will take full responsibility for it"

Or the president could just say that the deabt ceiling is unconstitutional based on the 14th amendments section 4. His oath requires him to ignore congresses inability to pass legislation and just pay our debt. The US government is not allowed to default on debt.
"Section 4.
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."

Nobody probably looked into this in the past, because it was all just empty rhetoric, but I wonder if the WH is looking into this now that they're dealing with Q-Nuts?

It would be awesome to see the GQP flail about as McCarthy completely fails at his SOTH duties, and after they send crap after crap that either doesn't pass the Senate or Biden vetoes, just before crunch time Biden announces that he's done waiting and he's ignoring the debt ceiling and paying our bills per the Constitution these dimwits never bother to read.
