Odds are good he won't do it again. So there is that. Which is nice. I guess.

I spend a lot of time in the woods alone.
Sometimes unarmed.
But this guy...

Everybody has to die sooner or later and there are a lot of ways to go. I guess if I got to choose, taking a nice hike into a favorite place and not coming back would be pretty good.

OooOoooOoH. Someone has a 4,000 acre nature preserve to walk around in while the rest of us have to share the primate house with the gorillas who have turds the size of my children. WooOoooooOOoo.

I go hiking alone in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park all the damn time, it's 33k acres and I do my best to stay away from other people most of the time. If I keel over while hiking then so be it, I will have quite literally died doing what I love but it won't be because I was hiking alone, it'll be because my heart suddenly stopped working which tends to kill you no matter where you are.

I guess that depends how I'd die... "Turned into grizzley bear sex toy" doesn't sound like the best way to go out, whether or not it's in my favorite hiking area.

I spend most of my life in woods alone, as Mrs Shirley is working out of state. I'm never armed. No need to. I love and respect wildlife (we have wolves, bears, cougars, coyotes and f*cking honey badgers), and they always leave me alone (full disclosure, I tend to have a bunch of dogs with me).

As far as the nice hike to a favorite place and not coming back...yeah, I've got that one picked out, and it's glorious. It's one of those places where people would be like "what would you want the last thing to see in your life" and I'm sure most people would say "my spouse/family" etc, but naw, I have my spot. I hope, I'll be able to choose when the time comes.

People die on Mt Baldy every year. I think people underestimate how dangerous it is because it's so close to highly populated and developed Los Angeles county. People think it's not far enough away from civilization to be wild. I've been up there, I used to mountain bike on trails around there. It may not be the Himalayas but it'll kill you pretty quickly if you fark up. He's the most famous person I've heard of dying up there. I know it's not official but come on. It's weird looking up at Mt Baldy and thinking that someone I've seen in movies and tv shows is up there, maybe forever.

Grizzly bears are a bit thin on the ground in New Jersey. I suspect that he was a different species' sex toy in the end.

He left his cell phone at home but brought along a credit card? Shouldn't that be the other way around? Where was he going to use a credit card?

THIS. Farkers assume suicide but accident or medical issue is possible.  Never go alone into the woods (or the hog pen) without your cell phone. Heard of a chopper pilot who made a forced landing and broke his ankle and wrecked the aviation radio.  Near sunset and had forgotten his cell phone. He had to drag his broken ankle about a half mile across a field to attract attention from passing cars. With my aircraft engine running ready to takeoff, I have shut it down to go back for my cell phone. Even Better. I personally know a guy who crashed and broke his back but cell phone could not be reached  because it was in a backpack and not on his person. Fortunately there were witnesses who could call for help.

I find this unlikely.

Cougars - North and South America.
Coyotes - North America.
Honey Badgers - Africa parts of Asia.

The mountain lions have been numerous and hungry this year, alas. There have been several females with multiple cubs.

Thrown in as an attempt at humor.

Ignore the #1 recommendation at your peril. Literally peril. Esp. in the winter. Lots of people think they can handle cold because it doesn't bother them under ideal conditions. Add injury, darkness and rain or snow and it gets dangerous really fast.

I carry something similar, in addition to a shortwave.

Nearly every time I read about some kind of similar story (where someone died), you always find out that the people involved didn't have any method of communication if something went wrong.  In the cases where everyone survived, it was usually because they did (or they were smart enough to be able to signal their location and were spotted quickly).
