Considering this is one of the Illinois teams in the Southern Professional Hockey League...I'd say you might be onto something there.

\I'm sure there's lower tier leagues with higher rates of attrition, but these guys are newer at it

The SPHL went downhill in recent years. I was an intern for a team in that league about 15 years ago. Decent crowds, good (enough) hockey. We got a lot of Canadian kids who were *just* not quite good enough for Canadian youth leagues. Lots of fights.

Being in a military town, we had a pretty engaged clientele. The new league they're in is doing OK, though the team had to re-brand under new ownership.

Then the SPHL started having real issues and most of the teams folded or left for other leagues. They tried to find replacements, but those teams couldn't sustain themselves.

It's just a crap shoot in lower level professional hockey in the US whether teams will be "successful" or not - successful being they only lose ~$1MM each season and the owner has enough money that it either doesn't bother them to lose that much or it's a vanity project that they will support no matter what.

The Quad Cities is a decent hockey community. The old Quad City Mallards won a few championships and had good crowds. There's still a loyal following for the Storm, but I think it's gone down some. The quality of play isn't as good.

Blah, sorry about that.

That's essentially what the Wikipedia article about the team says.  Of course you can take that will a big grain of salt considering the source, but it's the most logical explanation.

The city of Danville ousted a fairly successful FPHL team to get the SPHL in as the Vermillion County Bobcats.  The Bobcat owner is the daughter of a previous pro owner owner and thought she had the chops to start and run a professional team.  In all of the drama, she has not made a single announcement regarding the status of the team.
