Damn. I never got that joke before...

I always thought it was funny because Chuck didn't rhyme with seed or feed, as if Chuck had no skill with language, and then Sneed came along and saw the perfect opportunity.

I think what I'm feeling right now is what it feels like to be hit hard in the face with a clue hammer, where the hammer hits you so hard it changes your understanding of who you are and what your place is in the universe.

dang.

Meh I wasn't paying much attention, but I could totally have accepted that as real.

I mean it obviously wasn't, but the audio was pretty decent.

I could easily see this being used to duck with people, and I'm not going to say duck with just dumbass Republicans, everyone would be vunerable to this.

Except you, precious snowflake, your expertise in pixels obviously makes you the one human who can never be fooled.

I think you're just incredibly gullible, and so you assume (naturally) that every other human being must be as gullible as you. This is called the "false consensus bias."

In reality, this tech is no more effective than any other form of lying. If someone wrote an article in print that quoted Biden as saying, "I love sucking adrenochrome from the veins of newborns," I would question the source and look for multiple sources of verification. The same exact thing applies for audio; it's no different.

No, you included that last paragraph for yourself and only yourself. It's an attempt to pre-empt the very existence of anyone who might not be as gullible as you are, because it would deflate your fragile self-esteem to imagine otherwise.

You are right the American electorate is made up of critical thinkers who question everything and will always question things that confirm their existing biases. I don't know how I could have ever thought that the ability to duplicate a voice and video could be used to manipulate such a discerning audience as exists on Facebook and tic tok.

People are stupid. Sure, I'll agree with that. Americans are more stupid than average. I can buy that too.

The point is that the tech changes nothing. The people who would believe in bullshiat would believe it without faked audio or video. They'd believe it if you lied in print, or just told them about it in person.

Biden's lips are not wobbly like that. The sine wave sideways through them, at one point with the toplip getting a bit of a point to it, is just inhuman enough that I doubt someone watching this particular video would be fooled.

Listening, though? That could be a problem.

I currently work in biometrics testing - essentially, if you've ever used your face or fingerprint to unlock your phone, my company probably tested it.

I'm simplifying this a lot, but there's two main kinds of testing - APCER (liveness) and IAPAR (matching) - the first one is just a series of tests to figure out whether the system can see whether it's interacting with a real person, and the second is whether it can identify a specific person. Both kinds of testing have level 1 standards, in which we basically try to fool it with stuff you can make yourself, and level 2 standards, where we use cool stuff like custom 3D printed masks.

Video fakes are a level 1 standard, and I've never seen a system fail on them. I've broken into a phone with a color printout of a person's face, but never a video. We literally record people in close-up saying the exact phrase that unlocks the phone, play it in front of the phone, and the system just keeps saying that it's not a person. I am worried and interested that biometric systems are better at detecting fakes than people are.

That's usually why most deepfake stuff is either used in movies where people are paid to polish stuff, or if actually trying to decieve people, shared at mega compressed quality and potatoe resolution.

One day, it's gonna be a problem. Audio is basically there. But I'd give it 20 years before the visual stuff is gonna need to be analyzed by software to detect pixel irregularities, same as photoshops are gone over with the Metadata.

I'm not. That seems obvious. You say that you are using video.

I bet you aren't using projections.

Every lens I've sever seen looking at a video screen (of any sort, tv, computer, phone) registers different colours and various lines that I do not register with my own eyes.

As long as you are using pixels, I have no examplem of a camera lens that perceives them as human.

Besides that, no screen or projection is the same colour as a human. Humans do not glow. They will never, ever, match the colour of anything that does not glow...by definition (no pun intended with the word definition).

HUmans, on the other hand, very quickly acclimate to new visual media. Humans will make media work and claim they are accurate. For example, I've met adults who think that drawings are accurate, because they believe that al objects have a black outline in real life. Our species is extremely good at approximating with media, and then mistaking our abilities to understand approxiamte lines and simmilar colours as true measurements of real light as we see it. We do not raise our children to undertand how light works, or verisimilitude, apparently. I mean I did, ebcause I was in gifted classroom from Grade 1 until Grade 13 (Ontario curriculum). But appaerntly outside fo gifted classrooms, in North America, kids are not taught how light works, and are graded harshly for pointing out the differences between media and real objects.

When we see it in AI testing and HP computer systems and stuff, its farking berserk stupid, but somehow those normies who were taught that black outlines by pencils are realistic are the people in charge of planning the tests for our devices, giving out government R&D grants, etc etc.
