This change to Subway's operations could potentially result in a better sandwich.

Too little too late. Not sure where's the nearest Subway is (aside from the NYC subway) but I know where the Jersey Mike's within four miles of my house north and south are. They are good. The closest Subways I can think of are in a gas station or in the mall.

I haven't eaten at a Subway in quite some time. This is unlikely to make that happen. For national chains, I prefer Firehouse or Newk's, or even grocery subs from Publix. I kind of miss Blimpie.

Locally, we have Henri's (I went to elementary school with one of Henri's nephews, which is how I was introduced to the place). Traveling, if I want Cuban sandwiches, I like Brocato's in Tampa and have three or four Cuban places in S.E. Florida that I like. Havana (West Palm Beach). Latin American Grill. Versailles.

I miss when D'Angelo's used to be everywhere in MA.  Their steak and cheese subs were awesome.  The Italian subs were pretty good too, and at the time, it wasn't that expensive.  Their large sub size was 16", and they loaded them up, too.

I haven't eaten Subway since it was discovered that they made their bread from yoga mats. But to be fair, I bet I hadn't eaten there in the 10 years preceding the yoga mat thing, either.

I'm not really sure I'm against them, they're just not on my radar. And they serve yoga mats.

Didn't the EU force them to stop calling their buns "bread" because the recipe had too much sugar?

They sell yoga CAKES.

Firehouse and Jersey Mike's are both far superior, but there are also a couple fantastic local places here in Tucson that I think are better than all of those.

Last time I ate at subway my foreman took the portapotty for about 2 hours... and i font wanna know what unholy things happened.

I was on the roof and Barfed "chicken" red onions and banana peppers and misc. Veggies. While trying to toe em down the roof drain.

When we reconvened shaking sweating and empty we agreed no subway ever again

This is not right for Subway.  The only reason to go into a Subway is to get something fast and edible when other considerations prevent you from something better.

If Subway gets deli slicers, then it will be nothing more than a worse Jersey Mike's.

Me, too.

Save money by making more work for your employees. Don't bother training them on the slicer, that costs money too. And don't expect them to clean the slicer when they switch meats, because not that many people are allergic to chicken or object to ham for religious reasons.

And Jreck's in upstate NY is pretty tasty too. I dig a place where I can get just capicola instead of mixed with the "other " Italian cold cuts. Seriously, pepperoni and salami just overpower everything else.

Between the fresh bread, and the freshly cut meats, etc, Jersey Mike's is hands down the BEST sub shop that exists.  Although Publix runs a close second, at least the one near my mom's place in Lake Worth Fl.

I wonder how much kickback the Subway CEO is getting from his friend who happens to be the CEO of the deli slicer machine company. There are lots and lots of Subway stores that are going to need to buy the one and only sanctioned deli meat slicer.

..And in order to be more efficient, the franchise holders will now manually slice a giant pile during a quiet shift on Wednesday afternoon to last for a week?

/May be a bit drier than you're used to though, since it won't be pre-sealed in small batches anymore

Subway's meat and cheese come presliced and preportioned.

I thought they did that because they couldn't trust their artists to put the right amount on a sandwich.

I spent about 20 years helping to herd our local high school band around whenever they traveled.  At meal stops, a bunch of the students would always want Subway.  The whole Subway system is not designed to handle a group of 20-30 high schoolers at one time, so we'd spend the allotted lunch hour waiting to get our order.

I don't really find them any better, they just put on a show of slicing the meat in front of you as if that somehow makes it higher quality.  It still all just comes from those big plastic wrapped loaves of processed meat.

The full article says the parts of meat exposed to air start to dry out, so all those already-sliced meats and cheeses at subway are going to be drier than meat sliced to order.

You do have a point though... it's a fast food sandwich either way. All I remember from the last few times I ate at subway was there was so much shredded lettuce. I even remember asking for just a little bit and they'd still pile it on and when I threw away some of the extra lettuce later, the meat-to-bread ratio was disappointing. Pretty sure they were using lettuce as filler.

To each their own. Meatball subs are about the only kind that I won't eat. I don't have any good sub shops near me, just the national chains. Jimmy Johns seems to have the best bread, Jersey Mikes has decent meats, and Subway is the most customizable and has decent discounts. Picking one is mostly a matter of having other errands in the direction of one or the other. I only partake about every other month.

In my area, there are a zillion Subways, one Pepperjack's, and 3 locations of a local franchise. That's it.

Subway and Pepperjack's are garbage. The local place is okay, but the only really good thing they have is pastrami, and only one location has it.

The prices at all 3 are so high, and the quality so unimpressive, that it is actually cheaper to just go buy the ingredients for a sub at the local grocery store (they have good deli meats and bread) and make your own.  It tastes so much better.

The cost of pre-made food is so high lately, though, that I think I have to basically stop eating out. I live alone, and I make good money for the area I live in, but the price of restaurant food is just nuts. I can't do it. Hell, even groceries are nuts. I would switch to ramen if it wasn't so terrible for you. Instead, I'm eating a lot of bean tacos/burritos. Which I actually enjoy quite a bit.

I can't imagine buying a sub sandwich. It's too much money for a sandwich. For the price, I can make three or four of them, and the output will be better tasting.

I have like 3 really good delis near my work. I have zero reason to go to a Jersey Mikes or subway when I can buy a pretty solid Meatball and sausage combo from three different places that make them so much better.

I can commiserate with most of the messages here. I used to choose Subway over other fast options on work trips.  Especially for those regional ones where we drove as a team for a half day. It makes sense for lunch far better than McD's or similar when keeping time on the interstate. Having the veggie option but making it full and filling was awesome for keeping a crew happy with a single stop.

They lost something about ten years ago and I don't mean the bread. It exudes profit driven hedge fund cost cutting mentality where the taste is like those cheap bags of cold cuts in the lower section of the case. I can't help but think about Mitch Hedberg and his observation about why can't turkey just be itself.

That's about when I went on a road trip with a friend, and we stopped at Subway.  He ordered the meatball sub.  It was a cold, congealed mess and he had the worst gas for the next 200 miles.  It's the last time I set foot in Subway and I still have nightmares about that meatball sub and the gastrointestinal fallout.
