I don't understand 80 For Brady coming out now. Was it filmed like five years ago and shelved until now?  I can't imagine a film like that having a very long shoot or much time in post. I'd think a celebrity-centric vehicle like that you'd get out the door quickly.

So the last film worth seeing was Violent Night and it doesn't look like anythings improving for the foreseeable future.

The book it's based on, Cabin at The End of the World, is actually really good.

Calling the movie Knock At The Cabin however was not a good idea.

Oh well hope the author got paid decently at least.

I had to Google the cast because there was one actress in the previews who was totally unrecognizable and holy crap, it is Jane Fonda. Put a mustache on that and white makeup and it's a Guy Fawkes mask.

I know nothing about it beyond what I saw in the trailer.  Is it worth my time to look up whether my theory that the twist is there's no apocalypse, it's just a group of psychos trying to get a family to kill one of their own is correct?

That would explain why everyone is comparing it to The Village.  I think all his other movies end with the unlikely explanation being correct don't they?

Honestly? Looking at the RottenTomatoes reviews for it is awfully telling. Critics have pretty much "Meh"ed it at a low 60%, but audience reviews have it pegged at nearly perfect. Almost as if the Brady nutjobs have flooded it with positive reviews because "ZOMG IT BRADY!!!!"

We're showing 80 For Brady at our theater, and the elderly women are dragging their husbands to it in droves. Good crowds this weekend. I watched it last night with my wife (we're not elderly), and it's just so dumb. But it knows who it's audience is.

Titanic barely made any money at all to start.  Most big movies (Pirates of the Caribbean movies or Super Hero movies for example) tend to have an utterly gigantic first weekend, tank heavily in their second weekend, and then are barely a thing after 3 or 4 weeks.

Titanic on the other hand debuted to very pedestrian numbers and then... just never went away.

My birthday is in March.  I remember seeing Titanic in the theatres for a late birthday present.  I don't think we went until late March or early April.  It was STILL #1 in the theatres then.  The staying power was crazy.

It did not leave 2nd run theatres until OCTOBER.

Jim's entire point (just like with Tom Cruise with Top Gun Maverick) is making great movies that captivate you and compel you to tell your friends and drag them to the theatre and rely on word of mouth to sustain things.  It works very well.

It really doesn't matter when it's released.

Here's some of the competition from 2 weeks prior to 2 weeks after:

Amistad, Good Will Hunting, Scream 2, Deconstructing Harry, Tomorrow Never Dies, Mouse Hunt, As Good As It Gets, An American Werewolf In Paris, Jackie Brown, Wag the Dog

It's FINE to hate Titanic but it is just stupid to try to make an argument that it was released during a box office desert. All of those made bank.

Also FINE to hate all James Cameron movies but impossible to deny they make money, and it's not a special strategy of picking a magical release date.

That was a good read, thanks for the recommendation.  Yeah, I'm with the book's ending on this one.  If the world requires something so cruel as one of its foundation stones, then fark the world.  It deserves to burn to the ground.
