While the reasonable person would never have fought these allegations, the time for Billy to cut his losses was years ago.

It's like someone having a high school record taken from them, and then still fighting to get it back at 50 or 60.  NO ONE WOULD CARE if you just shut the hell up. The only one making this a public issue, is you.

Doesn't he make some money being the record holder at cons and stuff.  Conventions, not the con of cheating to get a record

In particular, these incriminating pictures were taken at what I assume was a paid appearance at the Florida Association of Mortgage Brokers convention.

Honestly, I don't even recognize these event high scores. I'd argue you shouldn't either.  The high score should be local to the machine.

It's far more impressive when ASS,  POO, SEX, or AAA set a new record at the local hangout.

He hasn't been the world record holder for some time.  They don't let you cheat anymore when doing world record attempts, and a handful of people are better at Donkey Kong than him.

They just haven't built there lives around it and organize a coterie of co-consiprators to make sure the records stay.  Then sue for having their "feelings hurt"* when an organization insists on following the rules that define its records.

Note that Guinness (of the records and towels) rolled over once threatened with legal issues (granted, I think you could use UK courts, which making proving you didn't libel a guy rather hard).  Twin Galaxies is the side with the legal costs refusing to settle.  Somebody (presumably who takes old coin-op games a little too seriously) bought the Twin Galaxies arcade a bunch of years ago.  Turns out the old owners were part of the above "coterie" and helped a few guys keep records without looking closely at the "proof".  New guy considers the "Twin Galaxies high score board" to be an important part of his purchase and is willing to fight to keep it honest.  No idea about anything else about the guy.

olorin604: I found this stuff interesting when it first came out, now I just want everyone involved to die.

[more or less postscript] Ok, so I went and googled.  "Twin Galaxies" is no more, being taken over by "Old School Pinball and Arcade" and owned (one link said "an owner")  by one JasonShiffer.  His google hit on linkedin includes the line "Jason is highly capable at providing strategic thought leadership regarding the technology roadmap of a developing product."  So maybe everybody's death would be no great loss.  The Ars article comments dug up some dirt on the youtuber (as if being a youtuber wasn't bad enough) as well.
[/postscript]

/*  yes, while the lawsuit concerns defamation, it doesn't make any claim to libel, just the "implication" that removing his records implies cheating.
// it looks like he'll get all the evidence he needs of cheating once he's done (and I'm sure Twin Galaxies will update the record book to mention "removed as a cheater" once it is safely established in court).
/// I think the youtuber guy has been hit with a libel lawsuit (he does claim Mitchel cheats).  You'd think a simple motion to drop the case due to "unsladerable" would be easy to file.

Best guess that is why he is doing it.  It must get harder and harder to milk the spoils of being the "King of Kong" 4 decades after the birth and death of Donkey Kong.  Gotta keep himself in the public eye somehow, and this is the only way he'll get on something like Arstechnica.

Does the game software support simultaneous dual-direction input, either as a form of a diagonal input or in the form of supporting simultaneous input from two switches?

Seems like this should be an easy thing to answer.  If the software supports it but it was unimplemented in the original hardware, then there's an argument to be made against using dissimilar replacement joysticks.  If the software doesn't support it then it would come down to whether or not the replacement offered some other kind of advantage.

TFA notes that the replacement has a longer stalk which may normally be a disadvantage, but if the throw of the stalk to where it activates switches is especially short, or if the spring tension is different than stock, then perhaps that could offer advantages.  On the other hand if the player were unaccustomed to the differences in the joystick relative to a stock unit, then that might not really offer any advantages, and could even be disadvantageous.

All of which would be totally irrelevant, since the terms & conditions specifically require an unmodified setup.

The machine was 26 years old at that point. It had probably been repaired, but a photo can't prove the underlying mechanism was replaced, just that the joystick is different.

But at a taller height which would still disqualify the machine even if it wasn't an 8 way, which that red model apparently is according to people who actually know this stuff.

First, original hardware is original hardware. That joystick is not original hardware and has different capabilities from original hardware.

Second, as I understand there is nothing in the electronics of the game preventing the simultaneous use of multiple directions, that is solely restricted by the hardware. Sn going from a four direction joystick to an eight direction joystick is immediately proving the player a non-negligible advantage.

Season 2 of Leverage: Redemption has the crew trying to free members of an e-sports team from an abusive & exploitive 'manager'. Elliot was having similar thoughts as you.

Back in my day, it was 'car racing isn't a *real* sport...' And I remember one Indy 500 winner (Castroneves, IIRC) describing the experience as being similar to getting beaten in the head with a rubber hose for a month.
