Makes me think of that video from 1990s shark week where a bunch of people on a cruise were swimming in the ocean off of small skiffs and a great white showed up. One woman wasn't quite fast enough to get out, so her leg became the rope in a game of tug-of-war between a shark and the people on the boat trying to haul her out of the water.

I've been deeply affected.

How do I tell them where to send a plane ticket so I can get counseling?

Those dolphins let her die. Either those dolphins are cowards or they know something you don't.

Couple of things:

1) This was probably a bull shark.  Bull sharks can tolerate fairly fresh water, and are highly territorial.  Jumping into the water next to a bull shark is likely to trigger an attack.

2) Sharks normally stay far away from dolphins though... they are scared of them.  Dolphins will often murder sharks just to show them who's boss.

It's a common piece of surfing wisdom that where dolphins swim, there are never sharks. But for ocean-goers who take comfort in a pod of dolphins swimming by, shark experts have bad news.
"This is a myth," Andrew Nosal, a shark expert at the University of San Diego, told Live Science in an email.

Great white sharks will run from orcas though.

For the second time in a month I will change the lyrics to David Bowie's Heroes to fit a story.

I, I wish I could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep me together
Since a shark is eating me for dinner in a river
Oh we can be Australian just for one more day.

This is correct. Chances are the 'dolphins' were likely bull sharks. Fatal, but understandable, mistake.

As mentioned up thread, presence of dolphins does not equal no presence of sharks, as they are often hunting the same food- fish. But then, this poor girl also thought it was safe to throw herself after a bunch of wild dolphins. Just really unfortunate all around.

Dolphins are actually sadistic bastards who delight in watching humans suffer. All that stuff you see about them being friendly and saving people is propaganda spread by some of them wearing human suits and infiltrating Hollywood.

I mean it's a tourist thing, a legit enterprise- you're out there on a boat and everybody goes in the water.  but they're wild animals, you're not allowed to feed them or anything.

sounds like she was super unlucky

It's extremely likely to be a Bull. Going off the information online, Swan River is a freshwater river which rules out pretty much most sharks but the Bull, the Northern River Shark (which is unlikely due to the scarcity of them), and the Speartooth Shark. The problem is only the Bull is found anywhere close to where the attack was.

I've heard of tourist groups who go out and swim with dolphins or they have coves that dolphins swim to and from freely and interact with tourists. I've never heard of this just jumping in thing. Seems risky, though I understand the desire to do it. Definitely unlucky for her :(

Throwing yourself off a jet ski doesn't show good judgement. Neither does not checking for sharks before doing so. That said, she was 16 and most people don't expect good judgement from teenagers.

I have it on good authority (an elderly Australian person) that the deadliness of the flora, fauna, and terrain of the country is, while amusing as a recurring joke, purposely exaggerated so as to keep tourists away from a rather nice place.

Which doesn't mean it can't be dangerous, though I can't be arsed to look for comparative statistics. Anywhere can be dangerous, although, apart from rare outliers, only in Australia can you be murdered by a drop bear or clock spider.

Yes, regardless of what she thought she was doing, she was going to have sex with dolphins. Also, what happened to all the feel-good stories about dolphins attacking sharks to defend humans?
