OdradekRex: You know Donnie, when you run third party, you don't have to be controlled by the GOP. So go ahead!

The problem with this plan is that his track record and the track records of people around him suggest that a Trump independent campaign would somehow only manage to get on the ballot in like 3 states.  Which means that you'd have to believe his cult would either write him in or not vote for DeSantis or whomever in order for there to not be a serious risk that a Republican wins the Presidency.

On the other hand, he'd likely sue the other 47 states claiming unfair ballot access and so on, which would not necessarily be a bad thing given some of the existing laws.  But then there'd also be all the lawsuits over counting ballots and so on which would have that extra dimension of write-ins and if a write-in that says "MAGA" or "DONNY" or "FJB" counts as a vote for Trump.

The non-MAGA GQP plan just seems to be wishing that he'd just die already, because a prosecution of him results in him whipping up the base further and the base would probably riot and ruin everything, plus the GQP would have to make noises to defend him.

Ideally, hilariously, unironically, Cheetolini wakes up later today and sees this story on Fox News and launches into a huge, semi-coherent tirade about all this dark money from rich people influencing the electoral process and demands a whole set of reforms and perhaps a Constitutional Amendment or SCOTUS decision that throws out Citizens United.

This probably isn't the Kochs' angle but it shares a similar cynicism:

Oh man, who the fark is stupid enough to believe this absolute dogshiat?

1. If Trump is the nominee, they'll support him. They're "so committed" to defeating him they WON'T EVEN SAY IT OUT LOUD. They will push a small amount of money to some other folks in the primary, and if it doesn't work out... Meh. Then they'll back him anyway, and their networks of orgs and dark money channels will continue to protect him and rally "conservatives" together against everyone else.
2. Trump isn't the only corrupt, crazypants candidate, and they'll support any of them who will vote in the way the remaining Koch brother wants. Their words mean nothing, they've said shiat like this before then just quietly opened a new dark money channel anyway.
3. The Koch brothers were a huge part of the reason the GOP candidates in recent years have gone over the top of the bugshiat, nutso, farking crazyballs zone - they funded that, relentlessly, for decades. They'll continue to.
4. This article is just PR for them.

IIRC the GOP is changing some of the rules to be invited to debates. You will need some X% of small donations to avoid candidates being propped up by just a few interested (read: wealthy) people.

Not sure what the benefit of this strategy is. I see this playing to Trump's favor and providing Trump new angle to grift the 'small donors'.

tfg probably would not have been on the ballot in 2016 without the billions of dollars in free advertising the Kochs gave him. As far as a third party run, the decision would have to be made relatively soon because of the need to collect and verify signatures. Oklahoma, Colorado and Louisiana are exceptions, as of 2020 you could get on the ballot just by paying a fee.

The idea is that you will get less of a clown car than the first time. The main reason Trump won the 2016 primaries was that the votes were split 20 different ways and he kept getting a plurality. They think that getting rid of the Herman Cain types, their chosen candidate will get out to an early lead and eventually win.

They're wrong, of course, but that's the idea.
