When I was living in Wisconsin, switchblades ended up being legalized because Screech stabbed a dude in a bar.

Okay, out of curiosity I looked at the bill itself to see what exactly a "throwing star" is for purposes of the law.  I was curious how they would differentiate between a knife that you're simply electing to throw and a star.  The bill referred to existing law IC 35-47-5-12(b):

As used in this section, "Chinese throwing star" means a throwing-knife, throwing-iron, or other knife-like weapon with blades set at different angles.


So, it's not just throwing stars, but any blade meant for throwing.  Plus, being Indiana you get some bonus racism.  They included it in the original draft of the bill, but the latest draft at least has "chinese" crossed off for removal.

My son has some and he says that they work OK, but it's hard to get the knack.

As someone who grew up buying Ninja magazines, and watching Revenge of the Ninja so much the vhs wore out I must admit 9yo me totally supports this legislative accomplishment.

It's telling that the original legislation called them *Chinese* throwing stars. Shuriken are Japanese.

Meh "banned" doesn't mean enforced. Growing up, butterfly knives and stuff were banned. Doesn't mean I didn't get my hands on that stuff in like middle school.

Meh "banned" doesn't mean enforced. Growing up, butterfly knives and stuff were banned. Doesn't mean I didn't get my hands on that stuff in like middle school.


Yeah, my brother used to get them at a flea market in the 80s.

One of the moral panics about gangs. Those dangerous hooligans were using switchblades and we KNEW they were just itching to move on to throwing weapons. Despite guns, you know, existing.

There was also a late 80s panic against kids into TMNT and other Nintendo ninja games. Nunchucks got banned everywhere too

IANAMartialArtsExpert, but I would imagine that the intent is distraction. If you get one to stick in your target, that's just a bonus.

It's why we have the strongest military. Our nation was founded by a bunch of guys with guns, who were sick of red-coats stealing their applejack.. we are very much a nation of warriors. For better and worse... lately, worse.

It's a tiny bit like throwing a boomerang sideways, like you want it to go up and down instead of across the top of ground cover. Plus, the real deal is a four-sided razor blade which must be handled VERY carefully.
