What could possibly go wrong?

Remember when radioactive medicine was all the rage?

This is just a gateway into electronic mind control devices.

Don't consume processed foods and added sugar and you'll be better off.

Tinfoil hats are a conspiracy by the aluminum lobby to trick the mentally ill into buying their products.

Definitely not "electric shock therapy", subby.  ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) induces a seizure, which dumps massive amounts of neurotransmitters into the brain's synapses, improving certain psychiatric and neurological diseases.  That seizure frequently leaves a patient very sleepy for several hours aka the postictal state.

The first part of the headline there is still the primary way we treat cancer. We are just slightly better at targeting the cancer with radiation.

Unless you can precisely control the current on a cell by cell basis - crudely forcing electrical current through the most advanced known computing device in the universe, made from organic materials, is a stupid farking idea.

Doesn't mean it can't work.  Taking poop out of one person's butt and putting it in another person's butt is a stupid idea, but it's great at treating some c. difficile infections.

Seeding a microbiome with a sample from a healthier one isn't a stupid idea.

Treating the human brain like a farking car battery is.

Some self-regulating systems won't reset on their own in slightly perturbed states.  Perturb them more and you might trigger a reset.  Perhaps not the best solution, but as you mentioned the brain is complicated and you must start with what you can.

Injecting radiation into your body also seems like a terrible idea. But you can't learn to target it, before you start trying it.

Ingesting moldy stuff sounds like a terrible idea. So does purposely rubbing puss or other wound discharge on yourself.

Add just a bit of science behind it, and direct it slightly and suddenly you have penicillin, and vaccines.

It's weird how cutting out context and making it seem completely haphazard instead of just a bit more guidance behind it can make most of medicine sound completely insane. Also, just how far desperation can carry people to go. I'm not espousing everyone taking all medical care into their own hands, but there's small enough shocks don't seem more outlandish than lots of self medication to me.

Tell that to patients who have had their epilepsy, severe (or treatment-resistant) depression, mania, catatonia, or dementia-related aggression treated with ECT. I think they're also starting to use it in treating Parkinson's and other degenerative brain conditions.

It's not "hit him again, Endo" or the Nurse Ratched kind of electroshock therapy you're thinking of from 60 years ago - this is FAR more targeted (IIRC they don't shock your whole brain, and do try to localize it. Maybe only in certain cases, like for epilepsy?), and the voltage (or amperage, or whatever) is much lower.

Your brain runs on electricity. When it's not running right, sometimes you need more electricity applied judiciously.

// your heart also runs on electricity, and we shock hearts back into healthy rhythms all the time
// the principle is the same, even though the meat is different
// not actually a doctor

My bf had a malformed clump of blood vessels removed from his brain a couple of years ago. He still gets pretty bad vertigo & headaches, but he uses Cefaly and it seems to work well for him.

Agreed, but I don't think it should be a DIY situation....
