It was a single non-armed balloon, not the storming of the Normandy.

"F-15 Eagles flying from Barnes Air National Guard Base, Massachusetts, supported the F-22, as did tankers from multiple states including Oregon, Montana, South Carolina and North Carolina. Canadian forces also helped track the overflight of the balloon.

The Navy has deployed the destroyer USS Oscar Austin, the cruiser USS Philippine Sea and the USS Carter Hall, an amphibious landing ship in support of the effort."

Came to say this exact same thing...

It was was an unarmed surveillance balloon.

It doesn't bode well for the US military that we have to have that much support to fly a mission over friendly territory to take that out.

WTF military announcing this aspect like it shows our might.

This is like bragging that you brought a bunch of your swole MMA fighting friends to beat up a quadriplegic 7 year old.

It would sound better as an offhand comment that we sent some trainee to blow it up for fun instead of sending an entire squadron to take down a farking balloon.

Probably none (sadly?)

Mythbusters covered this.  Air resistance bleeds off too much energy from something as small as a bullet when it's coming back down for it to really carry lethal force.
