Why is the owner of the store pictured in a disguise for the article?

That all sounds well and good until someone has an allergic reaction to the smoke and ends up in the hospital. Then they turn around and sue you because you planted a booby trap, which is illegal, and your life goes, you guessed it, up in smoke.

And not the fun kind of up in smoke with Cheech and Chong.

And honestly a $7000 alarm system with smoke and alarms seemed excessive, but then I remembered how much cigarettes cost. I mean, that's less than a hundred cartons. So I don't blame the guy, but it seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

The New Zealand government are paying subsidies to small retail businesses that want to install these, fog cannons seem like a reasonable way of de-escalation, safer and more effective than store workers feeling like they should be armed at work.

I have a client with this installed. His store fills with fog in seconds. Cheap Smokes and Cigars on Richmond Rd. Two wailing 120db sound bars add to the disorientation. All you want is out of the store when they activate.

Smoke machines, strobe lights, and horrible noise. Yeah, I remember the 1970s disco craze.

So, a smoke screen to hide you from your CCTV cameras? A better idea would be a spray set up to hit them with a solid blast of Liquid Ass. Of course, then you shop smells like Liquid Ass, although to a smoker, maybe they couldn't tell the difference.

I have a better idea
