This was sad. I used to work at a corporate job and being a resourceful person to do art, I would go into dumpsters for crap to create with for my sculptures . One day behind a Kmart's and in the dumpster I found a whole bunch of candy. Being the good employ I always was, I put some of it up in the common kitchen for others to share. These guys in the offices are mostly millionaires doing their daily rip off deals. They ate it up and for a few months I added more every day or two when it was gone. I got a real kick outta that. Am I a bad person?

This is very important: Only Texans think that Texas is any where near the greatest state in the union. I mean, it's one of the few red states that isn't on federal welfare. So it's the best of that bunch. Maybe.

Nothing ironic or funny. We mostly ate out of dumpsters.

World's Greatest Country has lots of poor people, imports tens of millions of more poor people so the rich didn't need to pay the aforementioned poor people a legal wage, which lead to them becoming poor. Somehow poor people are still around. Wait until you see Europe's newest groups of poor people. Hint: they're poor

The Texas power grid actually had zero problems during this storm. The problem was localized to central Texas that had an insane amount of trees and power lines fall due to ice accumulation. There were as many trees down during this storm as there are during most hurricanes. Of course Farkers would never do research before being judgmental.

My power company is proactive about cutting trees away from power lines before there is an ice storm.  Does Texas not do that?

For the most part yes... but there was a huge backlog in Austin due to homeowner pushback, pandemic labor shortages, etc.

Seems ERCOT investing in underground power lines would prevent the outages. Why don't they do that? Maybe, just maybe, bc they're run by assholes who don't care if Texans die?

Couple months ago I was at the local market about 90 minutes before closing standing in the checkout line. There were about 8 people in line and one checkout clerk. The other two clerks were taking baked goods and pastries that were about to expire and dumping them in a garbage bag. Someone asked if they were getting donated. nope straight off the shelf and into the trash. my broke ass was pretty infuriated. they probably had 150€ of food in the trash. how about lowering the price so it sells? or for farks sake order less. Im still mad and hungry and broke.

Well, any one of them with a mature enough populace to understand that there isn't a greatest country. I'd accept we are the greatest if we could be the best in the world in at least ONE of the following:

Fewest homeless
Best healthcare
Involved in the least foreign conflicts (lol)
Best free education system
Best public transportation
Fewest guns per capita (lol)
Lowest wealth disparity
Lowest prisoner population
Least violent crime

There's been a backlog in trimming and it would have helped but only some. Enough ice came down to topple trees entirely and even a 500 foot comms tower that landed on distribution lines. No amount of trimming would fix that.

The linemen arriving from elsewhere in the country to help restore are comparing it to tornado and hurricane damage.

As for burying lines, the latest cost estimate is $12 - $15 billion in austin alone. Of course we all know it will be more than that but also because you can't just put a high voltage line in the ground without addressing many technical factors there are feasibility issues too in the existing residential areas

People in Chicago and Texas think "greatest" just means "largest", which explains Chicago hot dogs, pizza casserole, and Texan mentality.

Texans also believe it is the late 1800s and get distressed when the existence of Alaska is brought up, which is both larger and has more oil.
